The Dilemma: Supporting Your Fantasy Team or Favorite Team
March Madness has ended and baseball season has just begun, prompting plenty of trash-talking about brackets and fantasy teams. In the interest of full disclosure, I am a Duke basketball (relatives live near there) and Boston Red Sox (family grew up here) fan. You can imagine my chagrin, then, when I objectively picked the University of North Carolina to win the NCAA men’s basketball tournament rather than my beloved Duke. It’s the same feeling that I had last year when several groups of my friends asked me to join their fantasy baseball leagues, and I ended up with several Yankees players, including Alex Rodriguez.
GAME OF THE WEEK Men’s Lacrosse Wins Overtime Thriller on Garvey’s Late Goal
Corey Garvey ’10 scored with 1:44 left in overtime to give the MIT men’s lacrosse team an 8-7 win over host University of Massachusetts Boston on Tuesday. With the win, the Engineers improved to 2-6 on the season while the Beacons fell to 1-6 overall.
Garthwaite, Peterson, Wojcieszynski, Blankstein Enter Institute Top Eight
The lightweight crew team finished their indoor winter training season with four men breaking into the Institute’s top eight 5k records. Co-captain William R. Garthwaite ’08 and Andrzej “Woj” P. Wojcieszynski ’08 earned second and seventh in the record books with times of 17:17.4 and 17:31.8, respectively. Meanwhile, Raphael “Raffi” R. Peterson ’10 earned fifth with a time of 17:23 flat and co-captain Aaron M. Blankstein ’10 took eighth with 17:38.3.
sMITe Finishes Seventh in Yale Cup After Wins Against Brown, Williams, Vermont
The MIT women’s ultimate frisbee team “sMITe” came in seventh out of 16 teams at the Yale Cup tournament last weekend in New Haven. The tournament brought together top teams from the Northeast that MIT will be playing throughout the spring season in the competition to go to Nationals.
Men’s Volleyball Team Reaches Quarterfinals
The men’s volleyball team competed in their fourth consecutive North East Collegiate Volleyball Association Championship Tournament this past weekend at Ramapo College. The team earned a berth into the tournament after finishing the regular season with a 9-2 record in the New England Division of NECVA. The winner of the tournament advances to the Molten Division III Final Four.
Wang Dominates As Women’s Tennis Out-Duels Trinity College
The Engineers pulled out a solid victory over Trinity University on Saturday, leaving with a 7-2 win. A record number of fans were in attendance at the J.B. Carr indoor tennis bubble to cheer them on to their win, including President Susan Hockfield and her husband, Thomas Byrne.
Rasin Voted Most Improved as Men’s Gymnastics Takes Sixth
The men’s gymnastics team finished in sixth place with a score of 310.300 at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship hosted by the U.S. Military Academy this past weekend. In the individual competition, Boris Rasin ’09 placed eighth in the pommel horse (13.300) as Joshua S. Coblenz ’08 captured ninth in the parallel bars (13.150). In addition, Rasin was voted the Most Improved Gymnast by the league’s coaches.
Women’s Water Polo Earns Easy Victories Against Bowdoin, Bates
The MIT women’s water polo team (7-0) earned two easy victories over Bowdoin College and Bates College by scores of 14-1 and 15-2, respectively, this Sunday at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Analiese M. DiConti ’10 led the Engineers with nine goals, scoring over half of her goals in the first quarter to give the team early leads in both matches.
Women’s Tennis Dominates Caltech On Spring Break Trip to California
The women’s tennis team traveled to Pasadena, CA over spring break last week for the opportunity to train, bond, and compete. On Monday, they faced rival Caltech, whom they dominated, 9-0.
Sophia Harrison Wins National Championship on Uneven Bars
Behind a school-tying mark of 9.75, Sophia L. Harrison ’08 captured the uneven bar title at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association National Championship held this past weekend at State University of New York at Cortland. In addition to a trio of All-America honors, Harrison was the recipient of the NCGA Outstanding Senior Award, the highest recognition within the organization.
GAME OF THE WEEK Baseball Rallies in Eleventh Inning, Splits Doubleheader Against Babson
David M. Nole ’09 supplied MIT with its second walk-off hit in as many days as the Engineers rallied to defeat Babson College, 13-12, in 13 innings, to complete a wild nightcap of a baseball doubleheader on March 22. In the opening game, Babson was dominant in a 10-1 victory over the Engineers.
March Madness Not Mad Enough As All Top Seeds Dominate
You would expect the crowd at Satisfaction Restaurant and Bar in downtown Durham, NC to be filled with shirts of dark blue in late March, supporting Coach K and the perennial college basketball powerhouse Duke University Blue Devils. Well, not this year.
Coblenz Seventh in Individual Competition As Gymnastics Places Fourth at Nationals
The MIT men’s gymnastics team kicked off its postseason push with a fifth-place finish at the USA Gymnastics National Championship held this past weekend at Springfield College. Joshua S. Coblenz ’08, the Engineers’ lone representative in the individual competition, claimed seventh in the still rings with a score of 13.400.
