Institute Records Fall as Track And Field Competes at ECACs
The women’s track and field team recorded its best finish ever at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Championships this weekend, finishing second overall out of 51 scoring teams. Moravian College topped the standings with 56 points, followed by MIT with 42.5, and Bates College came in third with 42.
Women’s Water Polo Opens Season Undefeated
The women’s water polo club opened their season last weekend at Bates College, going 4-0 in a tournament that featured North Atlantic Division rivals. The Engineers defeated Wellesley College (10-8), Bates College (13-4), Boston University (10-4), and Bowdoin College (13-3).
Figure Skating Club Finishes Seventh As Brown Skates to Bronze in Dance
The MIT Figure Skating Club placed seventh out of thirteen competitors at an intercollegiate figure skating competition held at the University of Delaware last weekend. Saja A. Fakhraldeen ’09, Kachina C. Gosselin ’10, and Jingyi “Cynthia” Tang ’09 placed 4th, 6th, and 7th respectively out of eight skaters at the Preliminary Freestyle level.
Division Champions Face Off in Finals of NECHA Tournament
The University of Connecticut used a late six-goal outburst to overpower MIT and claim a 6-1 victory in the NorthEast Collegiate Hockey Association Conference A Championship on Sunday afternoon at the Conway Arena in Nashua, N.H. The Engineers’ bid to attain the conference crown was thwarted for a second straight season, as MIT fell to Bryant University in the title game last year.
Synchronized Swimming Places Seventh at East Regional Champ
The Synchronized Swimming Club took seventh place at the East Collegiate Regional Championships with a combined score of 41.5 points last weekend at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York. Canisius College’s varsity team, which has regularly placed high nationally, finished first with a score of 100 points. Keuka College placed second with a score of 80 points, followed by Wheaton College’s varsity team (77) and Boston University’s club team (57).
Records Fall as Men’s Swimming And Diving Team Places Second
The men’s swimming and diving team placed second at this year’s New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships this weekend, held at MIT’s Zesiger Pool. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy pulled away from the pack to win their third consecutive title, finishing the meet with a staggering 991 points, outdistancing runner-up MIT (868) and third-place finisher Springfield College (741).
Women’s Tennis Team Sweeps Bates College
The women’s tennis team swept Bates College 9-0 in their first match of the spring season last Saturday, bringing their overall record to 9-3. The team came into the match ranked 23rd in the nation.
The Tech’s Athlete of the Week: Jimmy Bartolotta ’09
MIT guard James M. “Jimmy” Bartolotta ’09 has been named Academic All-America First Team in men’s basketball in the 2008 ESPN The Magazine, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Bartolotta was the only junior selected to the college division first team. The announcement came after Bartolotta was selected as a finalist for the Jostens Trophy.
MATCH OF THE WEEK Fencing Competes at IFA Champ; Kopylov Given Cointe Award
The men’s fencing team finished ninth out of eleven teams this weekend in the Intercollegiate Fencing Association Championship, the oldest collegiate championship in the country. The épée team led the charge with an eighth-place finish, followed by foil (ninth) and sabre (10th). The women’s team finished tenth out of twelve teams, and the foil team posted the highest ranking for MIT as it took sixth place for the second year in a row.
Engineers Finish Third at New England Div. III Championships
The men’s and women’s track and field team came through across the board at the New England Division III Indoor championships this past weekend, as both teams took third place. On the women’s side, the finish was the best in MIT’s history.
Holbrook, Jacobi Win Titles as MIT Finishes Second at NEWMACs
With MIT and Springfield College separated by a mere 4.5 points heading into the final event of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference women’s swimming and diving championships on Sunday night, both teams knew at the start of the 400-yard freestyle relay that a first-place finish would almost guarantee victory. A mere 3:34.81 later, Springfield’s Moira Price touched the wall first, beating out MIT’s top team by just over two seconds to give Springfield its eighth consecutive NEWMAC title.
