While the men’s track and field team placed 20th out of thirty-eight scoring teams at the 2008 New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Aline Thomas ’08 is leaving nothing in the tank for the women.
Pamidimukkala, Holbrook Named MIT Athletes of the Year
Praveen Pamidimukkala ’08 was named the 2008 winner of the Howard W. Johnson Award and for the third year in a row, Doria M. Holbrook ’08 was awarded 2008 MIT Woman Athlete of the Year last week at the 2008 Awards Convocation.
Despite New Sparring Format, Sport Taekwondo Wins Nationals
The MIT Sport Taekwondo Club competed at Stanford University in the 33rd National Collegiate Taekwondo Association Championships on April 25–26. The team of 39 competitors from MIT claimed first place by a wide margin in both the Novice (color belt) and Overall Divisions. Tied for second place overall were the University of Califoria-Los Angeles, and UC-Berkeley.
Women Place Third at New England Div. IIIs As Men Claim Second
One week after securing an unexpected team title at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Championship, the men’s track and field team finished second at the New England Division III Championship last weekend. MIT secured just enough points to keep U.S. Coast Guard Academy at bay while Williams College pulled away for first place. The women’s track and field team finished third behind national powers Williams College and Amherst College.
Men’s Heavyweight Crew Holds On For First Victory Over BU in Fifteen Years
The men’s heavyweight crew moved up in the Eastern Sprints poll after defeating Charles River rival Boston University last Sunday morning. MIT competed as a guest in the race for the Jablonic Cup between the University of Wisconsin and Boston University.
Sailing Team Finishes Eight as Reed, Hass, And Field Named to All New England Team
The MIT sailing team finished eighth out of 12 teams at the Fowle Trophy New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association Team Race Championships hosted by Brown University this past weekend. MIT finished the event with a record of 2-12, while Boston College won with a record of 16-3.
Lightweight Crew Defeats UPenn
The MIT Lightweight Men’s Crew team took on the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia on Saturday, May 3. In the first varsity race, a strong start in the first thousand meters led to the beginnings of an open water lead, but the Quakers were not so easily beaten. UPenn made a strong charge with 700 meters to go, but MIT held off their attack to win by less than a second, finishing in 5:48.1.
sMITe Heads to Nationals After Regionals Win Over Dartmouth
The MIT women’s ultimate team (sMITe) took second place at the New England Women’s Regionals last weekend, securing a place at the College Nationals in Boulder, CO this May 16–18.
Men’s Tennis Registers NCAA Tourney Victory
The men’s tennis team won in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Tournament with a 5-0 win over Salem State College at Middlebury College on Friday afternoon. The victory is their first win in the tournament since 2001.
The Tech’s Athlete of the Week: Stephen A. Morton ’10
Stephen A. Morton ’10 was named New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Male Athlete of the Year for the second straight year. This honor came after his wins in the 100-meter dash and long jump at the NEWMAC Championships. Morton secured First Team All-Conference honors in these events. He also earned second-team accolades in the 200-meter dash after placing second in that race.

GAME OF THE WEEK O’Keefe Scores Twice in Final Minute to Beat Wheaton by One
Down by one with a minute left, the women’s lacrosse team was facing elimination in the quarterfinals of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Tournament. Samantha F. O’Keefe ’09 and the MIT offense wouldn’t stay down though, as O’Keefe scored two goals in the final minute to propel MIT to its first semifinal since 1995.
Sailors Earn Berth to the ICSA Dinghy National Championship
For the first time since 2003, the MIT sailing team qualified for the Inter-collegiate Sailing Association Gill Coed Dinghy National Championship in Newport, R.I. on June 2-4. The Engineers earned a berth by placing a fifth place out of eighteen teams at the ISCA Western Semifinal at the University of Southern California this past weekend.
MIT Sport Taekwondo Finishes 2nd Overall On Road to Nationals
The MIT Sport Taekwondo Club traveled to Columbia University on Sunday, April 20 to compete in the final tournament of the Ivy/Northeast Collegiate Taekwondo League Season. A strong performance by the team, coached by MIT Sport Taekwondo Coach Daniel Chuang, secured both second place at the tournament and second place overall for the season, surpassed only by Cornell University.
