The men’s and women’s track and field teams sent three athletes to the 2008 NCAA Division III Track and Field Indoor Championships last weekend at Ohio Northern University. All three athletes performed exceptionally, representing MIT well by each earning All-America accolades.

Hansen, Hoover Lead Women’s Tennis Over Tough Colby College
The women’s tennis team returned home from Colby College on Saturday with a 7-2 win, bringing its overall season record to 10-3. The team’s national ranking rose from 23rd to 20th in the country.
Geesman Named All-American at NCAA Division III Championships
By just qualifying for the Division III national wrestling tournament, MIT heavyweight standout Glenn J. Geesman ’09 had already accomplished the remarkable. But what the junior sensation achieved Friday night at the U.S. Cellular Center was beyond extraordinary. In the late evening hours, MIT’s most prolific muscleman was hailed as an NCAA All-American after pinning his opponent from York College in 2:27. Just before that match, Geesman soundly defeated his counterpart from the State University of New York at Oswego, 10-1.
Taekwondo Finishes Second at NYU Amid Field of 370 Athletes
The MIT Sport Taekwondo Club took second place at a tournament held at New York University on Feb. 24, the largest tournament in the history of the Ivy Northeast Collegiate Taekwondo League. Of the twenty four colleges competing, only Cornell University surpassed the impressive score of MIT’s team, coached by Master Daniel Chuang.
Pier Places Fifth in Giant Slalom at Nationals
After leading the alpine skiing team to one of its best seasons in recent memory, Timothy F. Pier ’08 performed well last weekend, this time as an individual. Pier placed fifth overall in the giant slalom at the U.S. Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association National Championship, held at Sunday River, Maine.
The Tech’s Athlete of the Week: Amy R. Magnuson ’10
Amy R. Magnuson ’10 added yet another record breaking performance to her impressive season at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, re-setting the Institute record in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.04 seconds.
Institute Records Fall as Track And Field Competes at ECACs
The women’s track and field team recorded its best finish ever at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Championships this weekend, finishing second overall out of 51 scoring teams. Moravian College topped the standings with 56 points, followed by MIT with 42.5, and Bates College came in third with 42.
Women’s Water Polo Opens Season Undefeated
The women’s water polo club opened their season last weekend at Bates College, going 4-0 in a tournament that featured North Atlantic Division rivals. The Engineers defeated Wellesley College (10-8), Bates College (13-4), Boston University (10-4), and Bowdoin College (13-3).
Figure Skating Club Finishes Seventh As Brown Skates to Bronze in Dance
The MIT Figure Skating Club placed seventh out of thirteen competitors at an intercollegiate figure skating competition held at the University of Delaware last weekend. Saja A. Fakhraldeen ’09, Kachina C. Gosselin ’10, and Jingyi “Cynthia” Tang ’09 placed 4th, 6th, and 7th respectively out of eight skaters at the Preliminary Freestyle level.
Division Champions Face Off in Finals of NECHA Tournament
The University of Connecticut used a late six-goal outburst to overpower MIT and claim a 6-1 victory in the NorthEast Collegiate Hockey Association Conference A Championship on Sunday afternoon at the Conway Arena in Nashua, N.H. The Engineers’ bid to attain the conference crown was thwarted for a second straight season, as MIT fell to Bryant University in the title game last year.
Synchronized Swimming Places Seventh at East Regional Champ
The Synchronized Swimming Club took seventh place at the East Collegiate Regional Championships with a combined score of 41.5 points last weekend at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York. Canisius College’s varsity team, which has regularly placed high nationally, finished first with a score of 100 points. Keuka College placed second with a score of 80 points, followed by Wheaton College’s varsity team (77) and Boston University’s club team (57).
Records Fall as Men’s Swimming And Diving Team Places Second
The men’s swimming and diving team placed second at this year’s New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships this weekend, held at MIT’s Zesiger Pool. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy pulled away from the pack to win their third consecutive title, finishing the meet with a staggering 991 points, outdistancing runner-up MIT (868) and third-place finisher Springfield College (741).
