Football Falls to Plymouth State In ‘Smashmouth’ Rushing Battle
In a one hour, 52 minute contest on Saturday, the Engineers fell to the Plymouth State University Panthers on the Panthers’ Senior Day in New Hampshire. Both teams were coming off of a tough loss looking to redeem themselves. The Panthers, who saw their conference title hopes dashed with a loss against Curry College last week, were looking for a win for their seniors on the final home game of the year. The Engineers were coming off of a disappointing loss in their final home game and Senior Day to the Seahawks of Salve Regina.
Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams Win Both NEWMAC Championship Titles, Runners of the Year
The nationally ranked number three MIT women’s cross country team placed six runners in the top seven, including Runner of the Year, Maria J. Monks ’10, to win its third consecutive New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship in convincing fashion on Saturday at Franklin Park. Seven Tech harriers were named to the NEWMAC All-Conference team.
Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams Both Win NEWMAC Championship Titles, Runners of the Year
Just as it has done every year since the conference began, the MIT men’s cross country team captured the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Saturday at Franklin Park. On the strength of eight All-Conference performances, the Engineers were able to extend their streak of league titles to 12. Hemagiri Arumugam ’10 was named the NEWMAC Runner of the Year as the top overall finisher.
Volleyball Defeats Mount Holyoke, Clinches No. 1 NEWMAC Tourney Seed
With a 25-4, 25-16, 25-11 victory over Mount Holyoke College, the MIT women’s volleyball team posted an undefeated mark of 9-0 in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) and improved to 25-7 on the year. The Lyons finished their season with an overall record of 4-22 and a 0-9 ledger in NEWMAC action.
Shotokan Karate Dominates in First Area Competition of the Year, Nearly Sweeps
The MIT Shotokan Karate participated in the Battle for Boston Tournament on October 24. The team fielded 11 students and nearly swept the competition in both Kumite (sparring) and Kata (forms).

MIT women’s soccer took on Clark University on a soggy Tuesday evening. The Engineers took an early lead and held on for the 2-0 victory in the final match of the NEWMAC regular season.
MIT Women’s Volleyball Clinches NEWMAC Regular-Season Title
MIT clinched its 3rd NEWMAC regular season title in five years by defeating Wellesley College 3-1 (25-2-, 22-25, 25-21, 25-23) on Tuesday night. With the win, the Engineers pushed their conference record to 8-0, while lifting their overall record to 24-7. Wellesley fell to 5-2 in the NEWMAC, 18-9 overall.
Football Falls to Salve Regina on Senior Day
On a dreary, rainy Saturday, the MIT Engineers stepped onto Roberts Field in Steinbrenner Stadium for the final time this season. The game’s final result was a loss to Salve Regina University 28-10.
Sport Taekwondo Opens Season With Dominant Victory at Home
In a decisive start to its season, the MIT Sport Taekwondo Club clinched first place at the first Eastern Collegiate Taekwondo Conference (ECTC) tournament of the year on Sunday, October 18. Organized by the club and hosted at the Johnson Athletic Center, the tournament drew 319 competitors from 20 different schools, including 46 athletes representing MIT.

Kimberly A. Barker ’13 recorded her first career hat trick while senior Ekavali Mishra ’10 added a goal and three assists as MIT downed Mount Holyoke, 7-1, in a key New England Women’s and Men’s Atheltic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey match-up Saturday. With the win the Engineers (13-4) improve to 4-3 in NEWMAC play and move into a four-way tie for third place, with one league game remaining.
The Head of the Charles: A Rower’s Perspective
<i>The Head of the Charles is the largest regatta in the world, comprising over 8,000 rowers and 1,700 boats. The 5km-long race course connects the MIT, BU, Riverside, Harvard, Cambridge Boat Club, and Northeastern boathouses.</i>

Men’s Lightweight Crew raced in three events at the 45th running of the Head of the Charles last weekend. In the Club 8+ event on Saturday, the freshmen lightweight squad powered their way to 16th position out of the field of 46 in a time of 16:19.491. The squad was led by coxswain Henry G. Skupniewicz ’13, followed from stroke to bow by Zachary C. Segal ’13, James E. Byron ’13, Samuel F. Simmons ’13, Cameron S. McAlpine ’13, John R. DiMino ’13, Stephen A. Freiberg ’13, Samuel T, Reineman ’13, and Devin A. Cela ’13.
