MIT to Showcase Fall Sports at Athletics Weekend on Saturday
This Saturday, MIT will hold its annual Fall Athletics Weekend to highlight fall varsity sports. They will be showcasing three of the most prominent fall sports — men’s football, women’s field hockey, and men’s soccer — throughout the day, with fun activities and events for fans. The festivities will begin at 12:30 p.m. outside the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center with a basketball shooting contest and pull-up contest. Participants and MIT sports fans will be given free lunch as well as markers and poster board to make signs for their favorite MIT players and teams.

After leading the MIT men’s cross country team to a fourth-place finish at the Codfish Bowl last weekend, Hemagiri Arumugam ’10 was named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Runner of the Week. It was the second consecutive week that the MIT senior has received this honor and fifth time overall.
MIT Football Falls to Nichols College, Still Looking for First Win
The MIT Engineers lost Saturday to the Nichols College Bisons at Nichols’ homecoming game 31-19. The Engineers came out strong, forcing a three-and-out right and responding by driving the ball down the field. The momentum was stifled, however, when MIT kicker Peter W. Gilliland ’12’s kick hit off the left upright. The Bisons, lead by quarterback Sean Smith-Vaughn, were able to drive downfield and take the lead on a 25-yard field goal.

In a battle of the Engineers, MIT Women’s Soccer won a 4-0 shutout over WPI in its conference opener Saturday at Roberts Field. MIT (5-2) has now won five in a row, while WPI (3-6) has lost two straight.
MIT Women’s Rugby Team Wins First Division Game Against Tufts
Rugby season is here once again, and the women from MIT have wasted no time in getting back to work on the pitch. After capturing the Division III championship at the annual Beantown College Tournament, where they blanked all four of their opponents, they were ready for the first test in their new Division. Last Saturday, the Tufts University team visited Briggs field to kick off the season with MIT.
Five Engineers Earn NEWMAC Weekly Accolades MIT Tops Springfield; May Records 1000th Kill
Following a highly successful week by a number of MIT teams, five student-athletes earned Athlete of the Week Awards from the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) on Monday. Hemagiri Arumugam ’10, Leslie A. Hansen ’10, Emily Kuo ’13, Kelly E. Schulte ’12 and Jacqueline M. Wentz ’10 were each tabbed as the league’s top performer of the week in their respective sports. Garnering Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week honors, Wentz helped MIT capture first place at the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational, a meet that featured many of the top squads in New England, including a number of NEWMAC schools. Wentz was the top overall finisher, a feat she accomplished twice as a junior, breaking the tape 19 seconds faster than her nearest competitor with a time of 17:40.
MIT Grad Student Competes in Pool Trick Shot Contest in Vegas
MIT graduate student Timothy E. Chin G, the 21st ranked player in the nation, placed third out of twelve competitors in the Ultimate Trick Shot Challenge, a pool trick shot tournament held in Las Vegas this past August.
Engineers Fall to Framingham State in Football Home Opener
The crowd was in full force as the Rams of Framingham State University entered Steinbrenner Stadium at 1 p.m. on Saturday for the Engineers’ home opener. With fans in full body paint and the band in uniform, the Engineers came out in a spirited defensive struggle.

With 27 seconds remaining in regulation, Brandon Holbrook hauled in a 27-yard pass to give visiting Framingham State College a 20-16 victory over MIT on Saturday. The decision marked the second year in a row in which the Rams have registered a come-from-behind win over the Engineers.

Emily Kuo ’13 had three assists and two goals in a 5-0 rout of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (3-3-0) today at Roberts Field. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Corsairs, while the win extended MIT’s streak to three.

MIT Cable offers MTV, MTV2, MTVU, (though no guarantee of actual music with three MTV stations) Telefutura, China Central Television, and TVJapan; whether duplicates or foreign channels, MIT shows a desire to appeal to all students. It even offers the NASA channel for those Course 16 NASA dreamers who may watch in awe.
