Members of MIT Debate Team Win National and Int’l Awards
For their fourth consecutive year, the duo of Kathleen A. Clark-Adams ’10 and Adam J. Goldstein ’10 have been winning significant awards for the MIT Debate Team on a circuit that emphasizes political, public policy related, and philosophical topics. Similarly, Goldstein and Bill H. Magnuson G have had enormous success at international tournaments, which use the British Parliamentary (BP) format of debate.
Harvard Hands First Loss <br />To Men’s Basketball Brown Collects All-America, <br />ECAC Accolades
MIT Men’s basketball suffered its first loss of the season last week, 88-61 to Harvard. The Engineers, ranked number 22 nationally, fell to 11-1.
M. Swimming and Diving Wins 2009 MIT Invitational Handily
MIT’s powerhouse men’s swimming and diving team dominated the 2009 MIT Invitational held Friday and Saturday in the Zesiger Pool. The Engineers won 17 out of 20 events, recording a score of 1197.5 and easily beating out second-place Tufts University (750.5).
Men’s Basketball Has Best Start In Program History after Sat. Win
William E. “Billy” Bender ‘12 had a pair of clutch three-pointers, one at the end of regulation and one in overtime, to help lead the MIT men’s basketball team to a 78-73 win over Gordon College Saturday. Noel Hollingsworth ’12 led the Engineers with 28 points and seven rebounds before fouling out late in regulation. Tech is now 8-0, the best start in program history.

Three weekends ago, MIT Womens’ Rugby competed in the Division III National Championship in Cherry Hill, NJ. In the semifinal match, MIT easily defeated Hofstra University 63 to 5, led by Caroline H. Hunting ’11 and Adedoyin T. Ogunniyi ’11.
Varsity Fencing Team Overcomes Slow Start to Take Second Place
On November 21, the MIT Varsity Fencing Team had its first team meet of the season, defeating conference opponents UMass (20-7), Boston University (21-6), New Hampshire (26-1), and Brandeis (14-13) before falling to Sacred Heart University (8-19).
Rubino, Doyle Named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans for 2009–10
Alex F. Rubino ’10 and Brian P. Doyle ’11 were named as <i>ESPN The Magazine</i> College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-Americans. Both received All-NEFC accolades for their performances on the field and being named to the first team All-District for their success in the classroom last week. Rubino, a third-year starter, is receiving the award for the second time, this year on the first team, while Doyle finds his way onto the second team for the first time in his career.
Upcoming Athletics Weekend Will Showcase Winter Sports
MIT will be hosting an Athletics Weekend this weekend to emphasize Tech’s winter sports. Headlining the event will be the men’s and women’s basketball teams. The MIT basketball programs have been able to raise the school spirit and unite the student body, creating some much needed athletic buzz across campus.
Tech Sport Taekwondo Team Takes Second at ECTC Tournament Sunday
On Sunday, November 22, the MIT Sport Taekwondo team traveled to Princeton University to compete at the third Eastern Collegiate Taekwondo Conference (ECTC) tournament of the season. Despite the smaller roster compared to rivals Cornell and Brown, the MIT team, coached by Master Dan Chuang, took second at what was thus far the largest tournament in league history.
MIT Taekwondo Team Takes Second Place at Cornell Tournament
A mere three weeks after the first Eastern Collegiate Taekwondo Conference tournament, the MIT Sport Taekwondo Club traveled to Cornell University to compete in the second tournament of the year on Saturday, November 7. Despite facing a twenty-man disadvantage against rival Cornell University, the team finished in second place.

Alexandra T. May ’10 was voted to the Academic All-America Volleyball First Team last week. May was selected as an Academic All-American Third Team last year, and joins Amanda Morris ’08 as the only First-Teams in program history. Her selection is the team’s 14th award and raised MIT’s institutional tally to 158, tops among Division III programs.
McShane Named All-American; Three Selected to Region Teams
Following their NCAA Tournament run this season, several MIT Field Hockey players earned regional accolades. Molly E. McShane ’13 was selected as the New England East Regional Player of the Year and a Second Team All-American by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). In addition, teammates Keri A. Dixon ’11, Anna H. Teruya ’12 and Kimberly A. Barker ’13 were named to the NFHCA All-Region teams.
Women’s Cross Country Places Fifth at NCAA Div. III Nationals
In its second straight appearance at the NCAA Division III Championship, the MIT women’s cross country team improved to a fifth-place showing at Saturday’s national meet, hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. Maria J. Monks ’10 and Jacqueline M. Wentz ’10 led the way for the Cardinal and Grey, as each earned All-American honors, the first such accolades for the program since 1998. Monks’ 13th-place finish marks the best individual effort at the NCAA Championship in school history.
