President Sally Kornbluth described the excitement of moving into her new role and discussed her goals for the spring semester in an email to the MIT community sent on Jan 4. The email is her first official communication since assuming the presidency on Jan. 1.
MIT researchers develop AI education program for U.S. Air Force and Department of Defense
A team of researchers at MIT Open Learning and the MIT Media Lab developed an academic program to teach U.S. Air Force (USAF) personnel to understand and utilize artificial intelligence technologies.
TEDxMIT holds Fall conference on Natural and Artificial Intelligence
On Sunday, Dec. 4, TEDxMIT held its biannual event titled “Natural and Artificial Intelligence” in collaboration with the Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Laboratory; the event was held in MIT’s Stata Center. After an a capella performance by the Chorallaries, 14 speakers presented on topics across the field of Intelligence -- neuroscientists explored human psychology, guided by the question ‘what defines a “mind”?, and artificial intelligence researchers discussed the “minds” of machines.

MIT expands building access for the general public
Barnhart wrote that building access for the general public will be expanded, with access to the libraries and “Main Group of campus buildings, including Lobby 7 and the Infinite Corridor” being restored.
MITCPA moves to federal mediation for contract negotiations
The MIT Campus Police Association (MITCPA) is moving to federal mediation for its contract negotiations. The move comes after 14 meetings, starting this July, with university officials did not result in a satisfactory contract, according to a press release sent to The Tech.
Drop Date, Thanksgiving, shuttles
All students are required to receive flu vaccines before Nov. 18 in order to access buildings and register for Spring 2023 and IAP.

Student center renewal to begin January 2023
Stratton Student Center renewal plans “are on the verge” of receiving approval and construction will begin early next year, Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Community Involvement Gustavo Burkett wrote in a Nov. 9 email to occupants of the student center.

The Blood Moon sighting on Tuesday started the week with a beautiful natural spectacle that may have reset the abnormally warm period of last week. This week is expected to return to the cold and chill typical of November. Tropical storm Nicole has attained hurricane status and is expected to make landfall early Thursday, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to the northeast on the weekend. Not only that but the first blizzard of the season is also forecasted to hit the Northern Great Plains and Minnesota on Friday.

Can you believe it’s November?
No, neither can I. Why is it so warm? I was walking across campus, basking in the sunlight, feeling so cozy that I caught myself on the thought of “wait, what month is it?” It is, in fact, November, and the sun is shining like half the semester hasn’t just passed us by. The whole of New England is in an abnormally warm period this week, with temperatures up to 20°F higher than the climatological average for this time of year.
