Boston Area Teams Play in the First MIT Cricket Tournament
A group of students was passionate about their favorite sport; they got together and built a club around it. But unfortunately, the club died down. A few years later, another group, equally passionate about the sport, revived the club and took it far enough to organize a great tournament: this year, the MIT Cricket Club hosted the first ever cricket tournament at MIT from Aug. 29th to Sept. 14th.

The Tech’s Athlete of the Week: Thomas S. Caldwell ’09
Thomas S. Caldwell ’09 has been named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men’s Soccer Player of the Week in light of his excellent start to the 2008 season. In the three games he has started for the Engineers, Caldwell has built a 3-0 record, made sixteen saves, and shut out two teams. He currently has a .941 save percentage and 0.33 goals against average, having given up only one goal against Endicott College.
Women’s Tennis Defeats Suffolk 8-1 to Start Season on Saturday
The MIT Women’s Tennis Team won their first match of the season this past Saturday over Suffolk University.
Football Defeats Maine Maritime In Season Opener, 42-39Men’s Soccer Overwhelms Caltech, 4-0Field Hockey Falls To UMass-Dartmouth
The MIT Football team emerged victorious in their first-ever game against the Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday, with a final score of 42-39. MIT’s DeRon M. Brown ’10 and Robert C. Utz ’09 were outstanding in the win, combining for 236 yards and three touchdowns to pace an excellent ground attack.
Winning Streak for MIT Volleyball Team Ends With Brandeis
“They can’t stop this train coming through!” Joshua A. Geltman ’08 exclaimed about the MIT women’s volleyball team and its dominance through its first four matches. Despite the crowd’s enthusiasm, the Engineers split their matches on Saturday, winning their first match in straight sets but falling to Brandeis in five for their first loss of the season. Geltman and the large crowd of alumni and students emphatically waved signs, stomped on bleachers, and cheered for the Engineers in the exciting atmosphere of Rockwell Cage.
Men’s Soccer Captures Victory Over Endicott
The MIT men’s soccer team secured a 4-1 victory over the host Endicott College Gulls on Tuesday night thanks to a trio of second-half goals. Zachary E. Kabelac ’12 paced the Engineers’ balanced attack with two assists while four different players found the back of the net to score. Thomas S. Caldwell ’09 collected three saves in goal.
Women’s Volleyball Takes First At Gordon College Invitational
For the seventh year in a row, the MIT women’s volleyball team kicked off its season by winning the Gordon College Invitational. The Engineers defeated the host Fighting Scots (25-17, 19-25, 23-25, 25-17, 15-13), Keene State College (25-13, 19-25, 25-21, 25-15), and Endicott College (25-22, 25-16, 25-19) to begin their campaign with a 3-0 record. Alexandra T. May ’10 was named the Tournament MVP while Lindsay E. Hunting ’09 was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Women’s Soccer Falls to Brandeis 4-0, Rebounds to Defeat Simmons College
MIT earned its first win of the campaign with a 1-0 decision over Simmons College. Edith R. Reshef ’11 provided the lone marker in Wednesday’s non-conference match as the Engineers rebounded from their 4-0 defeat by Brandeis University on Saturday.
Field Hockey Falls to NEC In Non-Conference Contest On Saturday, Outscored 5-1
The New England College Pilgrims defeated MIT 5-1 in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday as Jodie Dresser led a balanced scoring attack. Virginia L. Nicholson ’12 provided the lone goal for the Engineers in her intercollegiate debut.
New, Upgraded Tennis Bubble To Be Completed September 15
Students returning to campus may notice a familiar sight missing from view next to Briggs field. The J. B. Carr Indoor Tennis center, known simply as the tennis bubble, was taken down last spring as part of an ongoing project to replace the structure. A new bubble will be in place by September 15, according to John B. Hawes Jr., MIT senior project manager.
MIT Places Seventh In NCSA’s Collegiate Power Rankings ’08
On Monday, the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) announced its sixth annual Collegiate Power Rankings. Following another pretty good year, the Engineers were listed seventh overall, securing their highest ranking in the history of the report. The NCSA’s 2008 Collegiate Power Rankings rate colleges and universities comprehensively based on student-athlete graduation rates, academic strength, and athletic prowess of the university.
