Football Defeats Maine Maritime In Season Opener, 42-39Men’s Soccer Overwhelms Caltech, 4-0Field Hockey Falls To UMass-Dartmouth
The MIT Football team emerged victorious in their first-ever game against the Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday, with a final score of 42-39. MIT’s DeRon M. Brown ’10 and Robert C. Utz ’09 were outstanding in the win, combining for 236 yards and three touchdowns to pace an excellent ground attack.
Winning Streak for MIT Volleyball Team Ends With Brandeis
“They can’t stop this train coming through!” Joshua A. Geltman ’08 exclaimed about the MIT women’s volleyball team and its dominance through its first four matches. Despite the crowd’s enthusiasm, the Engineers split their matches on Saturday, winning their first match in straight sets but falling to Brandeis in five for their first loss of the season. Geltman and the large crowd of alumni and students emphatically waved signs, stomped on bleachers, and cheered for the Engineers in the exciting atmosphere of Rockwell Cage.
Men’s Soccer Captures Victory Over Endicott
The MIT men’s soccer team secured a 4-1 victory over the host Endicott College Gulls on Tuesday night thanks to a trio of second-half goals. Zachary E. Kabelac ’12 paced the Engineers’ balanced attack with two assists while four different players found the back of the net to score. Thomas S. Caldwell ’09 collected three saves in goal.
Women’s Volleyball Takes First At Gordon College Invitational
For the seventh year in a row, the MIT women’s volleyball team kicked off its season by winning the Gordon College Invitational. The Engineers defeated the host Fighting Scots (25-17, 19-25, 23-25, 25-17, 15-13), Keene State College (25-13, 19-25, 25-21, 25-15), and Endicott College (25-22, 25-16, 25-19) to begin their campaign with a 3-0 record. Alexandra T. May ’10 was named the Tournament MVP while Lindsay E. Hunting ’09 was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Women’s Soccer Falls to Brandeis 4-0, Rebounds to Defeat Simmons College
MIT earned its first win of the campaign with a 1-0 decision over Simmons College. Edith R. Reshef ’11 provided the lone marker in Wednesday’s non-conference match as the Engineers rebounded from their 4-0 defeat by Brandeis University on Saturday.
Field Hockey Falls to NEC In Non-Conference Contest On Saturday, Outscored 5-1
The New England College Pilgrims defeated MIT 5-1 in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday as Jodie Dresser led a balanced scoring attack. Virginia L. Nicholson ’12 provided the lone goal for the Engineers in her intercollegiate debut.
New, Upgraded Tennis Bubble To Be Completed September 15
Students returning to campus may notice a familiar sight missing from view next to Briggs field. The J. B. Carr Indoor Tennis center, known simply as the tennis bubble, was taken down last spring as part of an ongoing project to replace the structure. A new bubble will be in place by September 15, according to John B. Hawes Jr., MIT senior project manager.
MIT Places Seventh In NCSA’s Collegiate Power Rankings ’08
On Monday, the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) announced its sixth annual Collegiate Power Rankings. Following another pretty good year, the Engineers were listed seventh overall, securing their highest ranking in the history of the report. The NCSA’s 2008 Collegiate Power Rankings rate colleges and universities comprehensively based on student-athlete graduation rates, academic strength, and athletic prowess of the university.
Coach of MIT Sport Taekwondo Coaches USA Collegiate Team
On July 16–20, MIT Sport Taekwondo Coach Dan Chuang traveled to Belgrade, Serbia to serve as a US National Collegiate Taekwondo Team Coach. The US Team consisted of five coaches and sixteen athletes (eight men and eight women). The sixteen competitors from the US were part of a field of 285 athletes from 42 nations competing in the 2008 World University Taekwondo Championships.
Women’s Lacrosse Collects IWLCA Academic Accolades Tech Tennis Receives ITA Honors
For the sixth straight season the MIT women’s lacrosse team qualified for the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Merit Squad as it posted the third-highest GPA of 56 programs. Bryn Mawr College led the way with an average of 3.49, followed by the University of Rochester (3.453), and the Engineers (3.4).
MIT Dragon Boat Team Takes Gold Medal at Annual Festival
On Sunday, June 8, 2008, thirty-two teams of paddlers from greater Boston, New York, and as far away as Canada, raced down the Charles River at the annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival. Despite the blistering heat, the MIT Eager Beavers, sponsored by United Commercial Bank and the MIT Chinese Students and Scholars Association, paddled to victory, winning the gold medal in the festival’s recreational division.
Volleyball Programs Receive AVCA Team Academic Awards for Second Consecutive Season MIT Collects Eight Individual NACGC/W Academic Awards
MIT joined Vassar College as one of the only institutions to have both its men’s and women’s volleyball teams qualify for the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. Initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, this award honors collegiate and high school teams that display excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 mark on a 5.0 scale.

Bennett Crosses English Channel In Grueling 21-Mile, 11-Hour Swim
On July 28, and after an 11-hour battle from Dover, England to Cap Griz Nez, France, Clara S. Bennett ’10 joined an elite group by swimming across the English Channel. Bennett became the third MIT student-athlete to successfully complete the grueling, 21-mile swim.
‘Baseball’ Exhibit Shows That Baseball Mirrors Everyday Life
Sport and society are often linked, whether by a fan’s comparison between a game-winning goal and real-life heroics or a journalist’s association between performance-enhancing drugs and rampant dishonesty in American politics. Such comparisons are primed for aggrandizement: caught up in the moment, we often forget that the realm of sports does not always equal the realm of the real world. Based on its name alone, the traveling Baseball as America exhibit seems likely to fall under this category of distorted reality.
MIT Theater on Ice Ends Season at International Competition in Vermont
MIT’s Theater on Ice team competed at the Thirteenth Annual International Theater on Ice competition, held at the Gordon H. Paquette Arena in Burlington, Vt. on June 28. The team placed fifth out of five teams in the Adult Choreographic Exercise category in its first season of existence.
