MIT Football Beats Nichols in Pounding Rain Saturday 43-42
Rookie kicker and linebacker Peter W. Gilliland ’12 capped an amazing fourth-quarter comeback with a 37-yard field goal in the driving rain to lead MIT past Nichols College, 43-42, in a New England Football Conference Boyd Division contest at Steinbrenner Stadium on Saturday. The victory marked head coach Dwight Smith’s 100th career win, while MIT upped its record to 3-1 for the first time since 1988.

Jessica M. Oleinik ’11 converted a feed from Nirupama Yechoor ’10 eleven minutes into the second overtime period to lift MIT to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Nichols College in non-conference field hockey action Tuesday. The win was the Engineers’ third in a row.
The Tech’s Athlete of the Week: Jacqueline M. Wentz ’10
Jacqueline M. Wentz ’10 led MIT’s Women’s Cross Country team to another first-place finish in their second meet of the season on Saturday. Wentz finished in 18:30 to finish fourth at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational, leading six of her teammates who finished in the top 30. MIT, ranked No. 23 nationally, took first place among 41 teams at the meet. This impressive finish came one week after Wentz led MIT to a nearly perfect finish in the Engineer’s Cup, finishing first in 19:21, leading MIT’s sweep of the first five finishes.
MIT Women’s Rugby Takes Second Place In Beantown Div. III
The weekend of September 13–14 saw the MIT Women’s Rugby Club doing battle in Amherst at the Beantown Women’s Collegiate Rugby Tournament. On Saturday, MIT defeated Pennsylvania State University’s B Team 14-10 and dominated Cornell University’s B Team 24-0. In the finals on Sunday, Middlebury College topped MIT 12-7.

The MIT rifle team got off to a quick start in the 2008-09 season, sweeping both guns against the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The Engineers registered match-high scores of 2138 in smallbore and 2192 in air rifle.

MIT Cycling Takes Division Two National Collegiate Track Title
The MIT Cycling Team captured the Division II team omnium at the National Collegiate Track Cycling Championships held last week in Colorado Springs. The MIT team of six riders — Jason A. Sears G, Michael L. Garrett G, Anthony J. Schrauth G, Yuri Matsumoto G, Katherine S. Lovejoy G, and Martha W. Buckley G — came from behind to edge out DePauw University 687-608 and capture the team omnium.
GAME OF THE WEEK MIT Football Overpowers Massachusetts Maritime Academy in First Home Game
DeRon M. Brown ’10 rushed for a career-best 251 yards and two touchdowns to lead MIT football to a 42-14 victory over the Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Saturday. Brown followed up last week’s electrifying performance with the second-highest single-game rushing total in school history while the Engineers improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2004.

Tim Chin Takes Third Place at Recent Trick Pool Shot Competition
With a click and a blur of colors and motion, the table suddenly clears, like a magic trick, and the crowd cheers. The magician’s name is Timothy E. Chin G. In addition to being a graduate student at MIT, he is renowned as one of the top pool trick shot artists in the world after recently winning third place at a prestigious tournament in New Jersey. This winter, Chin will compete for the world championship in artistic pool in Atlanta, Georgia.
