The first round of the Major League Baseball (MLB) playoffs has concluded. Of the eight teams who entered the postseason last Wednesday, four are still standing. The Division Series did not offer nearly as much drama as the close of the regular season, with the matchups appearing lopsided and the winners advancing easily. The MIT Men’s Soccer team has been having a fantastic season, playing their way to an 11-0-1 record, 2-0 in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) conference play. On Wednesday, the Engineers defeated Brandeis University 5-0, their largest margin of victory in a shutout in 37 years.
Women’s Tennis Falls to Wellesley In Tuesday’s NEWMAC Match, 6-3
Wellesley College defeated the MIT women’s tennis team 6-3 in their match last Tuesday. The match started with doubles play as usual. The team of Leslie A. Hansen ’10 and Anastasia Vishnevetsky ’12 finished first, destroying their opponents 8-1. Next off was the team of Anisa K. McCree ’10 and Melissa A. Diskin ’11, who lost their tough match 8-1.

Senior netminder Thomas S. Caldwell ’09 turned away four shots en route to his Institute-record 15th career shutout as the MIT men’s soccer team edged out WPI, 1-0, in a NEWMAC contest on Saturday evening. With the win, MIT remains unbeaten and is now 10-0-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play while WPI dropped to 5-4 on the year and 0-3 in NEWMAC action.
Engineers Take First And Sixth at Div. III Cross Country Meet
The nationally-ranked no. 10 MIT women’s cross country team captured first place out of a field of 16 teams from across the country at the Division III Pre-National Cross Country meet, hosted by Hanover College on the site of the 2008 NCAA Cross Country Championships. Also competing at Hanover, the nationally-ranked no. 21 MIT men’s cross country team earned an impressive sixth place finish. The women edged Bethel University by two points for the best team finish at a national meet in the program’s history.
GAME OF THE WEEK Women’s Volleyball Beats Coast Guard In Exciting Five Set NEWMAC Match
The MIT women’s volleyball team recorded a thrilling 25-15, 25-20, 23-25, 22-25, 15-11 victory over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match on Tuesday night. With the win, the Engineers improved to 11-8 on the year and 3-1 in conference play while the Bears dropped to 5-8 overall and 2-2 in NEWMAC.

Leslie Hansen Makes MIT History in Finals Of ITA Championship
The MIT Women’s Tennis Team started off a busy week by making history at the ITA New England Championships this weekend and went on to defeat Babson College 7-2 on Tuesday. Leslie A. Hansen ’10 is the first player in MIT women’s tennis history to be a singles finalist. Hansen blazed through the draw until she reached the semifinals, which any team member who witnessed the match would describe only as “simply amazing.” Hansen won in three sets with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4). Hansen then lost a tough match with a score of 5-7, 0-6 in the finals.
