Women’s Cross Country Finishes Tenth at National Championships
Competing among 31 of the top squads in the nation, the MIT women’s cross country team secured a 10th place finish at the Division III NCAA Championship in Hanover, Ind. on Saturday. It was the first appearance at the National Championship meet in MIT program history and the Engineers more than held their own in the highly competitive field.
MIT Ballroom Dance Successful at Brown, Harvard Competitions
Since the first week of September, the MIT Ballroom Dance Team’s newest recruits have been working hard to master the steps, technique, and artistry of eight competitive ballroom dances: the American foxtrot, waltz, tango, swing, rumba, and cha cha and the international waltz and rumba. Thirty-six of MITBDT’s rookie dancers made their debut at the 16th Annual Harvard Beginners’ Competition on October 25th. Each of the newcomer events — international rumba, international waltz, American foxtrot, and swing — had at least 73 registered couples, but despite the competition, thirteen of MIT’s rookies made at least one final in these events, placing in the top six. Especially successful were Eddie Kay G and Chun Li ’08, who placed first in newcomer swing, waltz, and foxtrot and second in newcomer rumba.
GAME OF THE WEEK Women’s Cross Country Clinches Berth in NCAA Championships
Both the MIT men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the New England Regional Championship on Saturday, November 15. The women’s squad reached new heights, finishing in third place out of over 50 teams looking to qualify for the national meet. The result, the highest finish in program history at the regional meet, clinches a spot for the Engineers in the NCAA Championship next weekend in Hanover, Ind. MIT, currently ranked No. 16 in the nation, easily eclipsed its previous high of seventh place, which was achieved at last year’s New England regional. The men finished eighth, failing to qualify for the national championship, despite entering the meet as the fifth ranked team in New England and No. 23 nationally.
MIT Debate Takes First At Oxford, Cambridge IVs
The MIT Debate Team continued this season’s success over the past two weekends with strong performances at both Cambridge and Oxford Universities in England. This is the first year that the MIT Debate Team has competed at these two prestigious international tournaments.

The MIT men’s soccer team saw its record-breaking season come to an end following a 3-2 loss to St. Lawrence University in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament on Saturday. The Engineers closed the campaign with a record of 16-4-2.

MIT Equestrian Team Revived, Begins Training for Competition
At MIT, horseback riding is a sport that has vacillated between being active and successful one year, and being completely nonexistent the next. This year, Anna S. Jaffe ’09, President and Show Captain, and her team members, have undertaken the task of restarting the team. The group has again started getting together, training and competing at horse shows with the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA).

The Tech’s Athlete of the Week: Zachary E. Kabelac ’12
The MIT men’s soccer team earned six postseason honors from the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). As announced on Tuesday, Zachary E. Kabelac ’12, Christian W. Therkelson ’11, and Nitin Perumbeti ’09 all earned First-Team All-Conference selections. Thomas S. Caldwell ’09 and Max S. Stein-Golenbock ’12 both earned places on the Second Team. Rounding out the team honors, Kabelac was named NEWMAC Rookie of the Year, the fourth MIT player to earn this title.

GAME OF THE WEEK MIT Women’s Volleyball Wins in NEWMAC Quarterfinal Match
In the first New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Volleyball Championship Tournament meeting between MIT and Babson College, the No. 3-seeded Engineers emerged with a 25-17, 25-15, 23-25, 25-17 victory over the No. 6 Beavers in a quarterfinal match on Tuesday. MIT (21-15) will travel to Springfield College on Friday, Nov. 8 to square off with No. 2 Wellesley College in semifinal action. Babson concluded its season with an overall record of 16-11.
MIT Sport Taekwondo Captures Top Spot at Home Tournament
On Saturday, October 25, the MIT Sport Taekwondo Club organized and competed in the first Ivy Northeast Collegiate Taekwondo League (INCTL) tournament of the season. Hosted on campus at the Johnson Athletics Center, the tournament was one of the biggest in the history of the league, with 343 competitors from 21 schools. 53 of MIT’s own competed in a long day of forms and sparring. In the end, MIT emerged victorious, taking first place overall and showing its depth in many individual divisions.
