This past weekend, the MIT field hockey team competed in the Betty Richey Tournament held at Vassar College. The Engineers won both of the games they played to win the tournament and improve to 7-0. Kimberly A. Barker ’13 was named the Tournament MVP, and three other MIT players — Molly E. McShane ’13, Alexandra A. Wright ’11, and Keri A. Dixon ’11 — received all-tournament honors.
MIT Women’s Tennis Opens Season with a Win Over Springfield
This past Saturday, MIT Women’s Tennis competed in their first match of the season against Springfield College. While some team members were injured, the team still had a strong showing.

’09 Women’s Volleyball Season Begins with a Strong Performance
The MIT women’s volleyball team opened the 2009 campaign by winning the Gordon College Invitational for the eighth straight season. The Engineers swept Endicott College (25-17, 25-22, 25-14) and Keene State College (25-16, 25-23, 25-12) before topping the host Fighting Scots (25-10, 25-20, 24-26, 25-17) on Saturday. Katrina M. Ellison ‘10 was named the Tournament MVP while rookie Katie K. Spielbauer ’13 was tabbed for All-Tournament Team honors. Alex T. May ’10 posted 11 kills and six digs as Ellison and Cecily L. Joujon-Roche ’12 both registered eight kills and four digs against Endicott. Jennifer Li ’11 notched a team-high five blocks while Barden E. Cleeland ’10 totaled four blocks and three aces. Catherine Melnikow ’10 paced the defense with 11 digs to go along with three aces as Anna D. Dikina ’11 contributed six digs. Alyssa L. Rothman ’13 tallied 34 assists and four digs while Spielbauer chipped in six digs.
Late Goal Propels Field Hockey to 2-1 Win Over UMass-Dartmouth Engineers Fall to Eastern Conn., 3-1, at Babson Soccer Classic Nazareth Shuts Out MIT, 3-0, in Women’s Soccer Home Opener
Anna H. Teruya ’12’s blast from the top of the circle found the back of the net with just 7:41 remaining to break a one-all tie and lead MIT to a thrilling victory over UMass-Dartmouth in non-conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Jack Barry Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 3-0, the program’s best start since 1997. The Corsairs fall to 0-1 on the year.
Heavyweight Crew Competes in Henley Royal Regatta
MIT’s heavyweight eight traveled to Henley-on-Thames, England to compete in the Henley Royal Regatta on July 1–5. Tech defeated Molesey Boat Club to advance to the second round of the single elimination tournament, but the Engineers were knocked out by Brown University the next day, ending Tech’s season.

Following a historic season last fall, DeRon M. Brown ‘10 was selected to the d3football.com 2009 Preseason All-America First Team. The senior running back was the lone representative from the 16-team New England Football Conference (NEFC) to earn this honor and was MIT’s 10th overall pick and first since 1998.
Juicers Should All ’Fess Up Or Else Risk Destroying Baseball
“I would suggest everybody get tested, not random, everybody. You go team by team. You test everybody three, four times a year and that’s about it,” Red Sox slugger David Ortiz said back in February. Asked what should happen to players who tested positive, Ortiz responded, “Ban ‘em for the whole year.”

Four members of the MIT Sport Taekwondo Club are representing the United States at the 2009 Summer World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia. Competing from MIT are Rebecca Hung ’11, Karolina A. Corin G, Alicia Y. Zhou ’06, and Bobby Ren ’05.
Cricket Club’s Third Tournament at MIT Hosts 10 Area Teams
The third MIT cricket tournament kicked off to a frenetic start over a somber weekend of mist and drizzle on June 28. Ten teams participating in the MIT Cricket Club’s first summer tournament, an anticipated encore to tournaments held in the fall and spring. A testament to the popularity of the tournament was the attendance and avid interest of several established professional cricket clubs from the New England area.

The Parisians all wanted to see it. No doubt the television networks were banking on it. Tennis fans universally last week were anticipating the next chapter in what’s become an historic rivalry between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the French Open finals.
Magic Win Game Three Behind Record Shooting
On Tuesday night, the Orlando Magic defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 108-104 in Game 3 of the NBA Finals to cut the Lakers’ series lead from two games to one. The Magic, playing in front of their home fans, withstood a hot start by Kobe Bryant and a late Lakers rally to earn their first Finals win in franchise history.
