Ultimate caps off busy October with 1st place at tourney
October was a busy month for the MIT women’s ultimate frisbee team as it fielded teams in three different competitions. With an unprecedented addition of over 30 members to the roster this fall, MIT had the luxury of fielding multiple teams in the same tournament, giving its rookies valuable match experience.
Women’s tennis wins eighth NEWMAC title by defeating Babson College, 5-4, in final
Trailing in the match, 4-2, No. 1 seed MIT came from behind to win the final three singles contests to come away with a thrilling, 5-4, win over No. 2 seed Babson College in the final of the 2015 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women’s tennis tournament. Elysa M. Kohrs ’17 was named the tournament’s most outstanding player after capturing a key point in the No. 1 singles match for MIT.
MIT men’s soccer seeded first in this year’s tournament
The MIT men’s soccer team, ranked No. 21 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll, claimed its fifth New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season championship with a 3-2 victory over Springfield College at Brock-Affleck Field.
October’s MIT player of the month Megan E. Gebhard ’17 discusses volleyball, Halloween
The women’s volleyball team has an enviable 26-2 record overall this season as it seeks a second straight New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular-season title and a chance to host the playoff tournament. A big reason for its dominance is star outside-hitter, Megan E. Gebhard ’17. Gebhard, who made the NEWMAC all-conference first team last year, leads the team in kills, averaging above 4 per set. The Tech’s player of the month for October told us about team spirit, this year’s goals, and beach volleyball at Google.
Talented Celtics team to aim for playoff berth this season Addition of savvy veterans Johnson and Lee lends experience to roster and adds dimension to team
The Boston Celtics open their 2015-16 campaign as they look to return to the playoffs for the second straight year. Although the Celtics were swept by the Lebron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of playoffs, they managed to end the regular season on a high.
Sailing lands first-place finish in NEISA Invitational
The MIT sailing team, ranked No. 18 in the latest Coed College World Sailing poll, registered a first, sixth and eighth place finish at the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) Invitational, hosted by the Engineers, and finished fifth at the Captain Hurst Bowl, hosted by Dartmouth College over the weekend.
Men's soccer collects both NEWMAC weekly awards
For the third time this season, the MIT men’s soccer team has claimed both New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) weekly awards.
New-look Bruins have season cut out for them
Following a fifth-place finish in the Atlantic Conference last season, which saw the Boston Bruins narrowly miss the playoffs, the Bruins’ front office set in motion a mini-rebuilding phase as they seek their first Stanley Cup triumph since 2011-12.
MIT field hockey blanks Clark 5-0
A hat-trick by Bailey Tregoning ’19 coupled with a solid defensive performance from Jane Coffrin ’18 helped propel the MIT field hockey team to a 5-0 victory over Clark University in a NEWMAC contest on Saturday. With the win, the Engineers improved to 8-2 on the year and 4-0 in conference play while the Cougars dipped to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in the NEWMAC.
Women’s tennis finishes regular season unbeaten
MIT women’s tennis team completed its New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season undefeated after blanking Smith College 9-0. It is the fourth-consecutive season and the seventh overall that MIT has finished its NEWMAC slate undefeated.

Allie Hrabchak ’19 scored the solitary goal of the game to lead MIT past Wellesley on Tuesday, Oct. 13. With the win, MIT improved to a 8-5-2 record overall and a 5-1-0 in the NEWMAC.
MIT participates in Westchester Triathlon in NY
On Sunday, Sept. 27, the MIT triathlon team finished the 2015 Northeast Collegiate Conference Season with the Olympic-distance Westchester Triathlon in Rye, New York. Over 130 collegiate athletes from the region competed in the three-sport race: the 0.9-mile swim, 25-mile bike, and 6.2-mile run.
Frisbee season opens with 1 win, 3 losses
The men’s ultimate frisbee team opened their season on Sept. 26 with a win against Northeastern at home. The rest of the day brought three losses for the young MIT team. MIT entered into the tournament hoping to get its rookies some valuable gameplay experience by competing with top teams from Brandeis, Stonehill, Boston University, and Northeastern.
Football earns first win in home opener
Fans, immersed in gray and cardinal, flooded the stands of Steinbrenner Stadium to cheer on the MIT football team in its first home game of the season. The Engineers notched their first win of the season by an impressive 51-26 score line over Maine Maritime on the back of a dominant performance from running back Adis T. Ojeda ’19, who ran for a mammoth 262 yards including 3 touchdowns.
Freshman makes final four at USTA regional meet
Alex Cauneac ’19 of the MIT men’s tennis team made it all the way to the final four, before bowing out to Bowdoin College freshman Luke Tercek, 6-0, 6-2, in the semifinals of the USTA/ITA New England Regional Tournament which was held at Williams College over the weekend.
September's player of the month: Sean Bingham '16
The MIT men’s soccer team is off to hot start this season (6-1, 2-0 in conference) thanks to their premier center forward Sean Bingham ’16. Bingham has found the back of the net a team-leading eight times and has the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season title in his sights. Bingham ’16, a former NEWMAC athlete of the year, is September’s player of the month.

The MIT women’s volleyball team scored straight-set victories over Smith College and Regis College this past weekend. Abby Bertics ’19 shone for the Engineers with 10 kills against Smith while Alli Davanzo ’18 and Megan Gebhard ’17 racked 8 kills apiece against Regis College. With the twin killing MIT improved to 13-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
Season opens with loss for women’s club soccer
The women’s club soccer team opened its season at Steinbrenner Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 19 against Harvard. After a goalless first half, which saw both teams missing several scoring opportunities, Harvard took the lead with a goal early in the second half.
