Women’s swim & dive gets third at home invitational
The Engineers finish with 16 NCAA ‘B’ cuts at MIT Winter Invite; Columbia, NYU take 1st, 2nd
The MIT women’s swimming and diving team, ranked No. 8 in the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), finished third among nine teams at its own Winter Invitational with 875 points. The Engineers earned 16 NCAA “B” cuts over the three-day event.
Division I foe Columbia University won the meet with 1,292 points, while NYU, ranked No. 5, came in second with 1,119.
In the 200-yard medley relay, MIT’s A team comprised Catherine Wu ’19, Jessica Chen ’18, Margaret Guo ’16, and Veronika Jedryka ’18, and finished third with a time of 1:44.82. The team’s time was good enough for an NCAA “B” cut and was 0.34 seconds faster than the meet standard from last year.
In the 500-yard freestyle, Addie Chambers ’19 and Theresa Lo ’19 finished second and third with times of 4:59.87 and 5:00.79, respectively, both earning “B” cuts in the process.
Jedryka clinched a first place finish and a “B” cut in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:02.15, which was 0.39 seconds quicker than her second-place opponent from Columbia.
Wu and Guo placed the highest for the Cardinal and Gray in the 100-yard butterfly with fifth and sixth place finishes respectively. Wu clocked a time of 57.85, while Guo touched the wall in 57.99 seconds.
Chen went on to finish fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke, MIT’s best finish in the event. With a time of 2:22.08, she earned her first individual cut.
The final event of the MIT Winter Invitational was the 400-yard freestyle relay. Jedryka, Guo, Yu, and Chen teamed up for a third place finish behind Columbia and NYU with a time of 3:29.00. The team earned a “B” cut in the event, with a time half a second faster than last year’s meet standard.
