April’s Player of the Month: Maryann Gong ’17
The Tech’s April Player of the Month is Maryann Gong ’17. Gong was recently named the NCAA Division III Women’s Track Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. She won the 3000m race at the national meet to go along with a third place finish in the mile race and helped her team clinch second in the relay. She was also instrumental in leading the women’s track and field team to victory in the Division III regional meet.
Men’s volleyball team wins annual Scramble Tournament
In their final outing of the season, the MIT men’s volleyball team captured their second straight MIT Scramble Tournament title on Saturday, April 4. The Engineers blanked Lehman College (25-12, 25-13, 25-17), Bard College (25-17, 25-14, 25-20), and Endicott College (25-21, 25-23, 25-15) to finish the year with a record of 18-11. Alex Klein ’15 was named the Tournament MVP while Brendan Chang ’16 secured a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Men’s tennis blanks Springfield 9-0
MIT swept the doubles matches against Springfield College and used the momentum to complete a 9-0 win over the Pride in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men’s tennis action. MIT improved to 8-2 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC while Springfield fell to 4-5 and 1-1.
Can the Red Sox rebound in 2015?
After a forgettable first-to-worst season in 2014, the Red Sox are looking to bounce back for the second time in three years. After finishing with the highest slugging percentage in 2013, the Red Sox finished 14th in the 15-team American League in that same category. Quite simply, the bats that came alive the year before were largely quiet either due to injury (Pedroia, Napoli, Victorino) or were downright unproductive for large parts of the season (Boagerts, Nava, Gomes).
Fencer wins Elite 89 Award
Carrying a 5.0 GPA, Benjamin Lin ’17 was presented with the NCAA Elite 89 Award at the NCAA Fencing National Championship held this weekend at Ohio State. He is the second consecutive fencer to receive this accolade after Joey Rafidi ’14 was tabbed for this honor last year. Since the Elite 89 program was established during the 2009-10 academic year, the Engineers have collected eight awards.
Men’s lacrosse tops Coast Guard 14-6
In a game played in steady snow throughout, MIT and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy opened the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men’s lacrosse season on Saturday afternoon (March 28). The Engineers scored five goals in the first period and never looked back as they took a 14-6 victory over the Bears.
Women’s lacrosse suffers first defeat
Following a tight first half, Springfield College outscored MIT, 11-6, in the second frame to secure a 16-9 victory in a NEWMAC women’s lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon. Senior Michelle Dorsey paced the Pride (8-2, 2-0 NEWMAC) with five goals and two assists while Emily Young ’18 led the way for the Engineers (7-1, 1-1 NEWMAC) with fours goals and five draw controls.
Gymnastics club hosts invitational
The MIT Gymnastics Club hosted the Alumni Invitational Gymnastics Meet on Saturday, March 14, at the DuPont Gymnasium at MIT.
Athletes earn All-America honors
MIT’s Cimran Virdi ’16 and Maryann M. Gong ’17 highlighted MIT’s performance at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend, earning individual titles in the pole vault and 3,000-meter events, respectively. Both student-athletes collected All-America honors with their first-place performances.
Figure skating ends term with showcase
The MIT Figure Skating club hosted their annual figure skating exhibition this past Saturday, March 14, at the Johnson Athletic Center Ice Arena. This season-ending exhibition event witnessed a number of alumni performing alongside the current MIT figure skating team.
Lin ’17 NCAA bound
Benjamin Lin ’17 and Tzer Wong ’18 will represent the sabre squad at the NCAA Fencing Championship to be held March 19-20 at Ohio State. This is the second time in program history the Engineers will have multiple competitors in the same weapon at the championship as they had two sabre entries in 2001.
SSAC 2015 unites Stats with Sports
The Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, held on Feb. 27 and 28, is the mecca for sports fans — dozens of teams from almost every major league, and hundreds of sports industry organizations were represented.
Sabrina Drammis leads MIT to its best finish in 12 years
Starting this month, The Tech is launching a new “Player of the Month” feature profiling one of MIT’s premier athletes from across varsity and club teams. Kicking off the series is women’s basketball sensation, Sarbina Drammis ’16.
Men’s tennis picked to repeat championship
After capturing the program’s 16th consecutive conference crown last spring, the MIT men’s tennis team was picked to win the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) crown, as announced by the league last Friday morning. Tech received seven first-place votes in the preseason poll — votes were casted by the conference’s coaches.
MIT places second at Cornell tourney
The MIT Sport Taekwondo team finished off last semester at Brown on Nov. 22. As it was the third match of the year in the Eastern Collegiate Taekwondo Conference, the competitors were eager to use the skills that they improved upon over the course of the semester. Both poomsae and sparring were tough this tournament, but the team showed their worth and finished off the day second place in Division I.
Babson hands MIT loss
MIT held a six-point lead with 14 minutes to play, but sixth-ranked Babson College came back to take a 62-51 decision in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men’s basketball game. Justin M. Pedley ’16 led the Engineers with 15 points, while Joey Flannery led the Beavers with 19 points, all in the second half.
