Men’s Ice Hockey Defeats Westfield State in ShootoutWomen’s Basketball Rallies Past Bay Path, 50-43
Three weeks after the teams skated to a 3-3 tie, MIT and Westfield State again needed extra time with the Engineers prevailing, 5-4, Friday night. Three regulation periods and one overtime could not break the 4-4 tie and the teams headed to a shootout. Dustin P. Kendrick ’10 was the only player to score in the shootout, securing the win for MIT.
The Tech’s Athlete of the Week: Jimmy Bartolotta ’09
On Saturday, December 6, James M. “Jimmy” Bartolotta ’09 scored 31 points, leading the men’s basketball team to a 79-66 victory over the Tufts University Jumbos. This impressive performance put Bartolotta’s career total at MIT over 1,700 points, making him the first Institute basketball player to reach that mark. The previous record, which had stood unchallenged for 32 years, was held by Campbell Lange ’76, who finished his career at MIT with 1,699 points.

The MIT squash team traveled to Dartmouth University on Saturday, Nov. 22 for the Liberty League Fall Classic before returning home on Sunday, Nov. 23 to host Vanderbilt University. The Engineers fell to the U.S. Naval Academy, 9-0, and Wesleyan University, 8-1, before salvaging the weekend with a win over Vanderbilt, 5-4.

MIT Sport TKD Club Finishes Second at INCTL Tournament
After only two weeks of training since their victorious home tournament, the MIT Sport Taekwondo Club traveled to Cornell University on Sunday, Nov. 9 to compete in the second Ivy Northeast Collegiate Taekwondo League (INCTL) tournament of the season. Despite the short resting and training period, the team, coached by head instructor Dan Chuang and led by captains Corinna Hui ’09 and Christopher J. Han ’09, once again upheld their reputation as a formidable opponent by taking second place at the tournament and remaining in first place overall in the League.

Devin M. Lewis ’10 scored four goals, including a pair of penalty shots, to lead the MIT men’s water polo team to a 10-9 win over Iona College in the seventh place game at the 2008 Eastern Championship hosted by the United States Naval Academy. The Engineers end their season at 10-16 overall.
Women’s Cross Country Finishes Tenth at National Championships
Competing among 31 of the top squads in the nation, the MIT women’s cross country team secured a 10th place finish at the Division III NCAA Championship in Hanover, Ind. on Saturday. It was the first appearance at the National Championship meet in MIT program history and the Engineers more than held their own in the highly competitive field.
MIT Ballroom Dance Successful at Brown, Harvard Competitions
Since the first week of September, the MIT Ballroom Dance Team’s newest recruits have been working hard to master the steps, technique, and artistry of eight competitive ballroom dances: the American foxtrot, waltz, tango, swing, rumba, and cha cha and the international waltz and rumba. Thirty-six of MITBDT’s rookie dancers made their debut at the 16th Annual Harvard Beginners’ Competition on October 25th. Each of the newcomer events — international rumba, international waltz, American foxtrot, and swing — had at least 73 registered couples, but despite the competition, thirteen of MIT’s rookies made at least one final in these events, placing in the top six. Especially successful were Eddie Kay G and Chun Li ’08, who placed first in newcomer swing, waltz, and foxtrot and second in newcomer rumba.
GAME OF THE WEEK Women’s Cross Country Clinches Berth in NCAA Championships
Both the MIT men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the New England Regional Championship on Saturday, November 15. The women’s squad reached new heights, finishing in third place out of over 50 teams looking to qualify for the national meet. The result, the highest finish in program history at the regional meet, clinches a spot for the Engineers in the NCAA Championship next weekend in Hanover, Ind. MIT, currently ranked No. 16 in the nation, easily eclipsed its previous high of seventh place, which was achieved at last year’s New England regional. The men finished eighth, failing to qualify for the national championship, despite entering the meet as the fifth ranked team in New England and No. 23 nationally.
