Track and field competes at New England Championship
Competing without a pair of All-Americans, the No. 3 ranked MIT women’s track and field team was still able to take second place at the NCAA New England Division III Championship, hosted by Southern Maine over the weekend. Portia M. Jones ’12, Jamie L. Simmons ’12 and Hazel L. Briner ’11 captured individual New England titles, as Tech’s 90 team points were good for second behind Williams College, which finished with 156 points.

Bball beats Coast Guard
The No. 11 ranked MIT men’s basketball team raced out to a 23–3 lead and did not look back en route to a 64–53 win over Coast Guard in NEWMAC play on Saturday afternoon. The win clinches at least a share of the NEWMAC regular season title for the Cardinal and Gray, who improve to 21–2 and 9–1 in conference play, and now lead second-place Springfield by two full games in the standings. The 21 wins is a program high for a season, equaling the mark set in 2005–06 and 2008–09. Coast Guard falls to 7–14 (4–7 NEWMAC) with the loss.

Saints beat Colts 37-17 for their first Super Bowl title
The New Orleans Saints upset the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 in Super Bowl XLIV in Miami on Sunday night. Although the game wasn’t exactly the high-scoring shootout between two of the best offenses in the NFL everyone had anticipated, it was nonetheless filled with back-and-forth action, gutsy calls, and clutch plays.

Super Bowl preview: the sports staff’s picks
As a Patriots fan, I always feel obligated to root against the Colts. Unfortunately, over the course of the 2009 season, I’ve had to grudgingly accept that the Colts aren’t a terrible football team. However, the Saints’ superior running game and Dwight Freeney’s questionable status — even if he plays, I have a hard time believing he’ll be as effective as usual — make me feel justified in predicting that the Saints will win. Like most observers, I expect an offensive explosion from both teams. In the end, though, I think Reggie Bush will shake off the Colts’ run defense and make a play worthy of his paycheck.
