Five unanswered goals in the third quarter, including three in a span of two minutes, helped lift the MIT men’s lacrosse team to an 11-3 victory over Husson University in a non-conference game on Tuesday. Corey Garvey ’10 amassed a game-high seven points for the Engineers (2-1), finishing with three goals and four assists. His four assists resulted in four out of the five goals scored by Daniel G. Piemont ’10.
Women’s tennis falls 2-7 to Bates in close matches
This past Saturday, women’s tennis played against Bates in the second match of the season, falling 7-2. They had a smoky, fiery welcome, when a small fire started in the facility that caused a delay in the match. Luckily, it was put out and play was allowed to continue.
Track and field competes at NCAA D-III championships
The MIT track and field teams traveled to DePauw University in Indiana over the weekend for the NCAA Division III Indoor Championship.

Swimming and diving teams wrap up season, prepare for Nationals
As the swimmers sped into their last turn, the crowd roared. MIT parents and fans shot to their feet, screaming and cheering, as Lucas R. Cummings ’10 pulled ahead of Coast Guard’s Brian McGuiness and outtouched him by 0.25 seconds. The Engineers’ victory in the final 400-meter freestyle relay capped an amazing season for the MIT Varsity Swimming and Diving Teams.

A pair of MIT track and field student-athletes, along with two Tech coaches, were honored on Tuesday as the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced its regional Athletes and Coaches of the Year. The MIT men’s team, which recently captured its 11th New England Division III Indoor Championship, received individual accolades for senior Stephen A. Morton ’10, head coach Halston Taylor and assistant coach Katherine Bright. Portia M. Jones ’12 was named the New England Women’s Track Athlete of the Year as well

I somehow managed to wake myself up Saturday morning to attend MIT Sloan’s Sports Analytics Conference at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. I ventured into the main conference room and plopped down in one of the back rows, opening my laptop to take notes on a panel discussion on the future of sports ownership.
Engineers upset in NCAA tournament
In the Engineers’ second trip to the Division III NCAA Tournament, they were upset by DeSales University 72-64 Saturday at William Paterson University. The loss is the Cardinal and Grey’s second straight, after a defeat to Clarke University last Saturday in Rockwell Cage in the the NEWMAC tournament.

Men’s swimming wins fifth NEWMAC title
The MIT men’s swimming and diving team won 15 of 20 events to defend its NEWMAC Championship. The Engineers, whose five league titles are one shy of the Coast Guard’s NEWMAC record, finished with 1,027 points. Coast Guard came in second with 947.5 points, while Springfield College was third with a score of 673.5.

An Olympics to remember
For the past two weeks, the world’s best athletes gathered in Vancouver, Canada to compete in the XXI Winter Olympics (and, apparently, to distract me from my psets). After seventeen days of procrastinating in front of the TV (and enduring countless bad Geico commercials), there’s my list of the ten most memorable things from north of the border.
