MIT jumped out to an early 14-0 lead and never looked back as the Engineers took a 38-14 win over visiting Becker College in non-conference football action Saturday, September 13. MIT, which built a 28-7 halftime lead, saw Justin R. Wallace ’15 run for 136 yards and Peter J. Williams ’15 throw for 220 yards and a pair of scores in the victory.
Patriots look to regain form after stunning week 1 loss
After a pre-season filled with blockbuster free agent acquisitions and heightened expectations, the New England Patriots were abruptly brought back down to earth with a thumping 33-20 loss against the Miami Dolphins last Sunday in Miami. The loss comes as a surprise to most, as the Patriots were expected to be one of the main AFC contenders for the Super Bowl along with the Denver Broncos and, to a lesser extent, the Indianapolis Colts.
Lone goal lifts MIT past Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
For the third time this season, MIT’s women soccer team, ranked 25th in the nation and third in the region in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll, earned a one-goal victory as the Engineers defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 1-0, on Sunday morning at Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium. The Engineers and Athena’s were originally scheduled to face-off on Saturday, September 6 at 7:00 p.m., but due to inclement weather the game was postponed to the morning of Sunday, September 7.
Women’s volleyball team places second in weekend tourney
The MIT women’s volleyball team compiled a 3-1 ledger as it was the runner-up at the Vassar College Invitational this past weekend. The Engineers (7-1) fell to SUNY New Paltz in the opener (21-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-13) before outlasting the host Brewers, 23-25, 25-9, 27-29, 25-19, 15-9, in Friday’s nightcap. MIT made quick work of its opponents on Saturday as it swept the College of Mount Saint Vincent (25-9, 25-13, 25-14) and Ramapo College (25-17, 25-16, 25-19). Nicole C. Gagnier ’15 represented the Cardinal and Gray on the All-Tournament Team.
Win over Pomona-Pitzer gives football team 1-0 start to season
Hosting Pomona-Pitzer College in a return game from a year ago, the MIT football team erased an early lead by the Sagehens to take a 28-18 win in the 2014 season opener for both squads. Bradford L. Goldsberry ’15 scored a pair of touchdowns, one through the air and one on the ground, to help the Engineers win their season opener for a fifth straight year.

Women’s soccer puts up 4-0 win over Worcester State

Co-captain Ambika M. Krishnamachar ‘15 registered one goal and two assists, while Olivia M. Struckman ‘18 and Julia M. Goupil ‘18 combined for three strikes.

MIT cricket team battles it out in Ivy matches
MIT’s cricket team traveled to New Haven to take on Yale for the first time in their campaign this season. The conditions at New Haven were very different from conditions in the grounds that the team has gotten accustomed to. The prospects of a low-scoring game due to a wet outfield and slow, low pitch definitely dampened the spirits of the team. Winning a crucial toss, the Engineers decided to use the wet conditions to put pressure on the opposition, hoping the warm weather would bake the pitch and dry out the field by the time it was their turn to bat.
MIT taekwondo team has strong end of season
The MIT Sport Taekwondo team finished the season with a dominating performance at the last Eastern Collegiate Taekwondo Conference (ECTC) tournament, held at the University of Vermont on April 27. A series of intense sparring victories solidified the team’s second place in Division I, finishing with 451 points to Cornell’s 708.
MIT baseball team clinches bid for the 2014 NCAA Tournament
After winning the first game of the 2014 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Baseball Championship series against Wheaton, 6-4, MIT came back to sweep the doubleheader against the Lyons with a wild-ending 12-6, 10-inning victory to win the best-of-three series and claim its first-ever NEMWAC title. The Engineers will now get the conference automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Tournament, which will begin with regional action on May 14-18.
Men’s lacrosse earns awards
The MIT men’s lacrosse team received four post-season awards as announced by the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) on Tuesday. Harris A. Stolzenberg ’17 was tabbed for Rookie of the Year accolades and earned a spot on the All-Conference second team as head coach Walter Alessi was voted the league’s Coach of the Year. In addition, the Engineers saw Joel T. Santisteban ’14 and Paul R. Orrson ’16 receive first-team plaudits.
Stage set for the Champions League final in Lisbon
Everything is set for Saturday, May 24. Soccer fans have already marked their calendars for European soccer’s biggest night: the Champions League final. This year it will take place in Lisbon, Portugal in Benfica’s stadium, the Estadio da Luz.
2014 NFL schedule undergoes multiple changes
The 2014 NFL schedule was released last Wednesday night, and once again it is backloaded with divisional games, something the NFL has done over the past few seasons to emphasize the importance of facing divisional opponents in deciding playoff spots. This year, 57 of the 96 intradivisional games take place in the last two months, with 35 alone in December.
