MIT cricket team squares off against Babson College for top ranking in league
MIT’s cricket team locked horns with Babson College in an away game at Babson Park, Massachusetts on Sunday, April 27. Much was at stake for the Engineers, as a win would take them to pole position in the American College Cricket League. Overcast skies and a damp outfield welcomed MIT, on what appeared to be favorable conditions for bowling.
MIT softball drops final game of year
MIT scored first and took a two-run lead in the top of the third inning, before ultimately falling to 2013 NCAA Division III champion Tufts University at its final game of the 2014 season by a score of 4-3. Tech wrapped up the season with a record of 10-21, while the Jumbos improved to 33-3.
Real Madrid gain the upper hand with 1-0 win in first leg
The four semifinalists of the Champions League battled it out in the first leg of the matches last week. While Atletico Madrid and Chelsea ended up drawing 0-0, Real Madrid edged one over Bayern Munich to earn a 1-0 victory. There now only stands one more leg between these four teams and the finalists. While two teams will earn tickets to the final in Lisbon, Portugal, two teams will face the agony of defeat.
Men’s lacrosse team surges from behind to secure an 8-6 win
MIT generated six unanswered goals during the fourth quarter to come from behind to defeat Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 8-6, in a NEWMAC men’s lacrosse game on Saturday, April 26. Paul R. Orrson ’16 led the way for the Engineers (9-7, 4-2 NEWMAC) with a game-high five points on three goals and two assists. Reed McLean paced the Buccaneers (7-8, 1-5 NEWMAC) with two goals in their final game of the year.
Taekwondo comes in third Club team competed in national championship
The MIT Sport Taekwondo Club traveled to University of California, Berkeley April 4–6 to compete in the National Collegiate Taekwondo Association (NCTA) Championships. The club faced many tough and experienced competitors from schools all over the country and came in third in the Overall and Novice Divisions.
Women’s tennis team earns win Engineers take down ranked opponent Brandeis U., 8-1
For a second straight match, the 13th-ranked MIT women’s tennis team defeated a ranked opponent by an 8-1 score. This time the Engineers took care of 22nd-ranked Brandeis University on the DuPont Tennis courts, winning two of three in doubles before clinching the match by taking all six singles contests.
Michael Schumacher: A Formula One legend
In the world of sport, the term “legend” is reserved for an elite group of individuals — sportspeople who have distinguished themselves in ways previously thought unimaginable: Roger Federer for winning 17 singles grand slam titles; Michael Phelps for 18 gold medals at the Olympics; Sachin Tendulkar for hitting 100 centuries through his career; Joe Montana for winning four Super Bowls as the 49ers’ starting quarterback. In the world of motorsport, Michael Schumacher was definitely a “legend.” In an illustrious 19-year racing career, Schumi (as he’s affectionately known) won a record seven championships, a record 91 races, and started the most races ever from pole position.
MIT Ballroom Dance Team preparing for MIT Open
On April 5 and 6, the MIT Ballroom Dance Team (MITBDT) competed at the Harvard Invitational 2014, held at Hynes Convention Center in Boston. One of the biggest collegiate dance competitions of the year, the Harvard Invitational hosted more than 600 competitors from all over the country. Despite the fierce competition, MITBDT dancers brought out their best performances, with more than 20 couples placing in finals across different levels and styles.
European soccer year entering final stretch
Soccer has entered the final stretch all throughout Europe. Some leagues already have a team that has clinched the league title; other leagues are currently witnessing heated races for first place. Teams are trying to collect as many points as possible from their remaining games to finish as high in their league as possible. Players are showcasing their talents with hopes of being selected for their country’s World Cup Squad.
MIT pistol team wins big Women’s team claims the gold in aggregate
As the season comes to a close, the MIT Pistol Team has finished with a strong performance at the National Rifle Association Collegiate Nationals. The scoring members of the MIT women’s team (Jennifer Y. Hsu ’14, Kristine N. Kim ’14, and Jackie Wu ’16) put in an outstanding performance to take home the NRA Collegiate National title, placing first in Women’s Air Pistol and third in Women’s Sport Pistol. This is the first time the team has taken the gold in aggregate since 2007, where the then-varsity team won the open championship.
Alumna makes history
MIT Gymnastics Club gymnasts won national medals and landed its place in U.S. gymnastics history at the 2014 National Association of Intercollegiate Gymnastics Clubs (NAIGC) Nationals in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Almost 1,000 athletes across 76 collegiate gymnastics club programs and hundreds of fans packed the Chattanooga Convention Center April 2–5 for the largest NAIGC championships in the organization’s 25-year history.
Is current NHL point system hurting the game?
Pre-1983: All games were worth 2 points. There was no overtime, and the winner of each game got both points. If a tie resulted, the teams would split the points.
MIT field hockey team mounts comeback to win
Trailing by four with eight minutes left to play, MIT mounted a 5-1 run to force overtime where freshman Hannah Levy (Yardley, Pa.) scored the game-winning goal as the Engineers defeated Wellesley College, 15-14, in a NEWMAC women’s lacrosse game on Tuesday night. Kira M. Schott ‘16 led all players with six goals as MIT improved to 9-3 on the year and 2-2 in NEWMAC play. Meghan Peterson paced the Blue (4-8, 1-3 NEWMAC) with four goals and added two groundballs and two draw controls.
Men’s crew team comes in second
MIT’s men’s lightweight crew team traveled to California for the San Diego Crew Classic, which will take place from Friday, April 5 through Saturday, April 6. Tech entered just one boat in the event, a Varsity 8, that fared well on the first day of competition.
Women’s lacrosse team stops Smith College comeback
A four-goal run late in regulation helped the MIT women’s lacrosse team thwart a comeback attempt by Smith College and secure a 20-13 NEWMAC victory on Saturday, April 5. Hannah A. Levy ’17 generated a game-high six points on four goals and two assists for the Engineers (7-3, 1-0 NEWMAC). The Pioneers (1-10, 0-3 NEWMAC), playing with only 10 field players, saw Olivia Timmins and Anne Zawacki record hat-tricks.
