The Tech’s Athlete of the Week: Emily Houston ’10
Emily F. Houston ’10 has been named the Mid-Atlantic Conference Air Rifle Shooter of the Month for January after leading the Engineers to victory in that category in the Bean Pot competition last month. The junior captain has helped the Engineers compile a record of 25-8 this season.
Men’s Basketball Making History
In the 108-year history of the men’s basketball program at MIT, the team has never won a conference championship. That could all change this weekend.
Shin Claims Gold As Women Capture First
Last Sunday, the MIT women’s fencing team finished first out of 13 teams with a 96-22 record at the New England All Division Championship. Robin S. Shin ’12 went on to claim the gold in the individual sabre competition.

Behind six individual wins, the nationally-ranked No. 9 MIT women’s track and field team captured the NCAA Division III New England Championship for the first time in program history on Saturday. Jacqueline M. Wentz ’10 took first place in both the 1000 meters and the mile while Andrea E. Bradshaw ’09 ran an outstanding 800 meters to help the Engineers capture the regional championship. Sophomore Hazel L. Briner ’11 won the pentathlon while setting a school record on Friday for the Cardinal and Grey as well.

In its final tune-up before the National Rifle Association (NRA) Intercollegiate Championship, the MIT pistol team secured a 6,168-5,960 win over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy this past weekend. The women’s squad was also victorious, registering a 2,655-2,607 decision.
GAME OF THE WEEK Men’s Volleyball Tops Lesley in Straight Sets For Four Game Streak
The MIT men’s volleyball team extended its winning streak to four courtesy of a 30-10, 30-12, 30-12 decision over Lesley University in a North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) New England Division match on Tuesday. The victory lifted the Engineers’ record to 9-9 on the year and 5-3 in conference play while the Lynx saw their record dip to 1-11 overall and 1-7 in the league.
MIT Theater on Ice Team Takes First Place at SCNY Showcase
On February 14, 2009, the MIT Figure Skating team competed at the Skating Club of New York (SCNY) Showcase, a United States Figure Skating-sanctioned competition in theatrical skating held at the Chelsea Piers Sky Rink in New York City. The team placed first in the Production Ensemble event, which required at least 7 skaters.
Yankees’ Rodriguez Earns New Nickname For Himself: A-Roid
First, there was A-Rod, the scrappy kid playing in Seattle who seemed destined for greatness. Next came Pay-Rod, the star shortstop who ditched his team in search of a bigger contract. Not long ago, Joe Torre gave us A-Fraud, the narcissistic, demanding Yankee superstar. Now, the revelations of this past weekend provide another addition to the repertoire of variations on the guy’s nickname: A-Roid.

Senior standout Julia C. Zimmerman ’09 stayed on top of her game, winning the all-around and the vault, and placing second on the bars, as the MIT gymnastics team placed third in a field of four teams. Host Southern Connecticut State University came away with the win (185.950), followed by SUNY Brockport (184.550), the Engineers (175.000), and Rhode Island College (169.250).
Debate Team Reaches Quarterfinals at World Debate Championship
During IAP, the MIT Debate Team reached the quarterfinals of both the World Universities Debating Championship, held in Ireland, and the North American Debate Championships, hosted by Amherst University in Massachusetts. This accomplishment represents MIT’s best finish ever at the World Championships, a tournament normally dominated by international competition.
The Tech’s Athlete of the Week: Jacqui Wentz ’10
On January 25, Jacqueline M. Wentz ’10 became the first female athlete in the country to qualify for Division III NCAA Championships in the 5000 meters this year. Her automatic qualifying time of 17:05.2 at the Terrier Invitational broke the MIT record for the distance.
