Football dominates Salve Regina MIT overtakes No. 1 team with 29 seconds remaining
Two weeks ago, the MIT football team pulled off possibly the biggest upset in school history, beating previously undefeated (and nationally ranked No. 24 in Division III) Salve Regina University, 20-19. The Engineers, down 14-6 with 9:55 left to play in the fourth quarter, staged an unbelievable comeback, scoring two touchdowns in two possessions. The game winning drive started with just 1:08 to play. It was the last home game of the season, also known as Senior Day, making the victory that much more memorable for the Engineers.
Women’s Tennis dominates season
MIT Women’s Tennis completed a perfect season of play in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference today as the Engineers claimed the 2012 NEWMAC Championship with a 5-0 victory over defending champion Wellesley College. In a rematch of last season’s championship match, MIT reversed that decision to win its fourth conference crown and first since 2002. The victory also gave the Engineers the NEWMAC automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
Men’s soccer shuts out Elms College 8-0 Monday
Following an upsetting loss to Coast Guard over the weekend, the MIT men’s soccer team turned things around quickly when they shut out Elms College 8-0 on Monday night. The Engineers improved to 10-4-1 for the season, while the Blazers dipped to 6-7-2.
Women’s soccer victorious
In an exciting game that left them a goal behind at the start of the second half, the MIT women’s soccer team went on to defeat the Coast Guard Academy, 3-1, on a sunny Saturday afternoon following senior day. Jennifer R. Ibanez ’16 scored the game-winning goal in the 75th minute of play. The Engineers are now 12-3-1 for the season and 7-1 in NEWMAC play, while the Bears fell to 2-12 and 0-8 in conference play.
Friday’s Beaver Madness to kick off basketball season
The days are getting a bit chillier, which means basketball season is heating up. This Friday’s Beaver Madness marks the ceremonial kick-off to the start of the men’s and women’s basketball seasons at MIT, two campaigns that should be jam-packed with excitement.
Cycling takes on 45 degree banking, wins Nationals
Seven MIT Cycling members descended on the 45-degree banked 250-meter wooden velodrome in Frisco, TX, for the USA Cycling Collegiate Track National Championships on September 20 through 22. Their mission? Gold medals, Stars and Bars jerseys, and the hotly contested DII National Championship title.
Women’s soccer victorious
The MIT women’s soccer team edged out No. 7 nationally ranked Wheaton, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon, ending the Lyons’ undefeated season. The Engineers are now 11-3-1 for the season and 6-1 in conference play, while Wheaton dipped to 13-1-2 and 6-1 in NEWMAC play. Michaelann Rodriguez ’14 scored the game-winning goal 33 minutes into the game.
Women’s volleyball team beats Babson on Tuesday
MIT received 25 combined kills from senior Trinity P. Leonard and first-year Ada V. Taylor and 43 assists from senior Alyssa L. Rothman en route to a 3-1 victory over host Babson College in a NEWMAC women’s volleyball match at Babson College on Tuesday night.
SPORTS SHORT
MIT Men’s Tennis defeated Nichols College, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon making them 2-0 for the season. Though Edwin M. Zhang ’14 and Matthew T. Skalak ’13 had a tough 8-9 loss, sophomore Eugene S. Oh and junior Curtis L. Wu picked up an 8-6 win and seniors Tymor C. Hamamsy and Brian K. Oldfield won their match with a score of 8-1. Heading into singles with a 2-1 lead, the Engineers finished off the match strong. Zhang clinched a win against Nichols with a 6-3, 6-3 score. Though Oh ultimately lost his singles match, Oldfield had an impressive win of 6-3, 6-0. Followed by yet another win by Skalak of 6-4, 6-4 and Jeffrey R. Bu ’15 with a 6-1, 6-0 result, MIT secured the win against Nichols. MIT Men’s Tennis will host its next match against Eastern Nazarene College on Feb. 26.
Field hockey dominates
A solid defensive performance coupled with a second-half goal was all MIT needed in its 1-0 victory over the Springfield College Pride in a NEWMAC field hockey game on Saturday morning. Kimberly A. Barker ’13 provided the lone marker that was set up by Elizabeth A. Dethy ’15. Sophomore goalie Jenna R. Klein stopped the only shot on goal she faced in her second career shutout as the Engineers improved to 12-2 on the year and 5-1 in conference play.
Tennis beats Clark
MIT Women’s Tennis started off against Clark by sweeping the doubles matches, ultimately defeating Clark 7-2. Julia C. Hsu ’14 picked up wins in doubles and singles, including the match-clinching singles victory. After the No. 3 team of Vynnie J. Kong ’15 and Meghana Vasireddy ’16 dominated the first doubles set with an 8-0 win, the Engineers went on to take the rest of the doubles matches. Ava P. Soleimany ’16 took the first singles match of the night with an impressive 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 match, followed by Hsu with a score of 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2. Alana H. Peters ’16 made it 6-0 in MIT’s favor with a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the No. 6 match.
