Cycling team overcomes odds to win at Shippensburg
The MIT cycling team placed first overall at the Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference (ECCC) Shippensburg Scurry race with contributions from each of its seven team members.
Baseball scores 31 runs in a single game against Emerson
MIT’s offense cranked out a total of 44 runs and its pitching allowed just three as the Engineers swept a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball doubleheader from Emerson College to complete a three-game sweep of the series. In the first game, MIT set a new school record for runs scored in a 31-2 win and then completed the sweep with a 13-1 decision in game two. Max Lancaster ’18 hit three home runs and drove in a total of seven runs over the two games for the Engineers.
Alumni have summitted the highest points of every North American country
Scaling new heights or overcoming the insurmountable have become cliches associated with the achievements of MIT students. But for Matthew and Eric Gilbertson (both PhD ’14) those phrases apply almost literally. In just over five years the twin brothers have scaled the highest peaks of every single country (23 to be exact) in North America. In an interview with The Tech, they reflected on their incredible journey — from the hours of careful planning, to treading surreptitiously on the edge of perilous cliffs, to the sheer exhilaration of reaching the summit and the realization that they are the only breathing human beings in a quarter-mile radius with nothing but tranquility and snow for company.
Douglas A. Kogut ‘18 wins 200-fly national title at NCAA meet
Douglas A. Kogut ’18 won the 200-fly individual title at the recently-concluded NCAA Division III national meet, thereby becoming the first student athlete from MIT to win a title in that category and fourth to win an individual event at the national meet. His time of 1:47:28 was both a personal and a school record and he clinched it when the spotlight shone brightest. He was also part of the 400-free relay team that won silver.
MIT tennis matches wits against Loughborough in Trans-Atlantic Challenge
The MIT tennis team squared up against a team from Loughborough University visiting from England for the second annual Trans-Atlantic Challenge. Although MIT put up a spirited showing and the Loughborough players said they were impressed with the level of play, the MIT men’s and women’s teams were defeated with an overall score of MIT 3-13 Loughborough. While the three days of tennis were an important aspect of the trip, the goal of the Trans-Atlantic Challenge is to explore and develop academic and research collaborations between these two prestigious institutions.
Julia Sharpe ’09, William White ’17 shine in gymnastics meet
The MIT Gymnastics Club hosted its annual alumni meet shortly before spring break. William L. White ’17 clinched top spot overall in the men’s category with victories in the floor and vault in addition to second place finishes in pommel horse and parallel bars and third place in rings and high bars. MIT alumni Nate Sharp ’09 and Julia Sharpe ’09 made up the top three. Ben Rudolph of Cambridge Community Gymnastics won first place in rings, pommel horse, parallel bars and high bars.
Softball extends win streak to nine after taking two from Smith
Concluding the third straight day of doubleheader action for the MIT softball team, the Engineers extended their win streak to nine consecutive games with a two-game sweep of Smith College in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play this afternoon in western Massachusetts.
Marshall ‘16 twirls a gem, lacrosse season in full swing
Baseball (4-7) recorded a thumping 11-1 victory over Springfield. Alec Echevarria ’16 led the team with 4 RBIs.
Pistol clinches gold at national meet
The MIT Engineers won gold in both women’s air and women’s sport, placing 1st in the women’s team aggregate and remaining undefeated in the women’s events this season.
Men’s swim and dive clinches fifth at NCAA Division III National Championship
Men’s swim and dive finished fifth overall with 241.50 points at the NCAA Division III National Championship, held at Greensboro, NC. The highlight of the Engineers’ efforts was Douglas Kogut’s 200-fly national title with a time of 1:47.28. It was both a personal and an MIT record.

Men’s track and field tied for 16th place overall with 12 points at the 2016 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship meet held at Grinnell College.
Curling clinches bronze at collegiate nationals
The MIT curling team clinched bronze at the Curling Collegiate National Championship held at Chaska, MN from March 11 to 13. The Engineers comprehensively outplayed Nebraska, ending with a score of 12-4 to secure their second third-place finish in as many years at the nationals.
Women’s track and field finishes fifth at NCAA indoor championship
Women’s track and field placed fifth overall with 27 points at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship — the second straight season and third time in program history that the Cardinal and Gray have earned top-five honors.
A look back at Peyton Manning’s career
Two-time Super Bowl champion and five-time league MVP Peyton Manning announced his retirement March 7, following an 18-year career with the NFL, including 14 years with the Indianapolis Colts and four years with the Denver Broncos. Manning’s decision to retire comes just a month after he guided the Denver Broncos to victory in Super Bowl 50.

The nationally-ranked No. 14 MIT sailing team finished in third place at the Sharpe Team Race Trophy over the weekend at Brown University.
Men’s basketball comes up short in a see-saw battle against Babson
In a game that saw 11 lead changes and seven ties, No. 3 seeded-MIT put up a fight against No. 1 seed Babson College in the championship game of the 2016 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men’s basketball tournament. The Beavers managed to pull away late in the second half, however, and claimed the championship with an 81-69 victory. Junior Joey Flannery was named the tournament MVP and scored 24 points to lead Babson. Justin Pedley ’16 led MIT with 23 points.
