Egypt Defeats Cameroon to Win Its Sixth African Cup of Nations Title
Egypt beat Cameroon 1-0 in the final of the 2008 African Cup of Nations soccer tournament on Sunday in Accra, Ghana. The win marks Egypt’s record sixth African Cup title, successfully defending the trophy they won on home field in 2006.
Biodiesel Team Considers NW14 Location
The mission may not be over after all for the Biodiesel@MIT team, which three weeks ago was prepared to abandon its two-year project in the face of insurmountably high costs.
Bexley Withdraws From Dormcon
Bexley Hall has decided to stop paying its yearly $1,200 tax to the Dormitory Council and will not be represented by Dormcon, effectively seceding from the organization.
CME Being Funded Another Year
The Cambridge-MIT Institute is providing funding for the Cambridge-MIT Exchange program in what will be the last year of the CMI. Funding from CMI for the exchange program was originally supposed to last until 2006, and it was uncertain where funding for CME would come from. CMI is expected to fold up in 2008, and other funding sources will need to be found for CME.
Community Members Present at Tuesday’s iHouse Inauguration
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Tuesday as part of the formal opening of iHouse, the new living and leaning community in New House 1.
DormCon Selects Incoming Officers
A small crowd of about 25 students attended the Dormitory Council elections meeting that selected Sarah C. Hopp ’08 and James T. Albrecht ’08 as president and executive vice president, respectively. The meeting was held last night at the East Campus Talbot lounge. Six other DormCon positions were also selected during the meeting (see the table on page 14 for final results). Bexley Hall and Next House were not represented at the elections.
Overenrolled 3.091 Will Remain In 10-250 But Stream to 26-100
With students in 3.091 (Introduction to Solid-State Chemistry) outnumbering seats in 10-250, where the subject is traditionally taught, course administrators have decided to add live video streaming of the lectures in 26-100.
Summer Housing Results In, Some Rooms Still Available
The results of the undergraduate summer housing lottery were released this past Tuesday, with over 96 percent of students who applied for summer housing receiving their first choice of dormitory. In all, 685 students applied for summer housing, with 35 cancelling so far. Last year, 750 people applied for the lottery.
iHouse Slated to Open In Fall at New House 1
A new living and learning community will open in New House in the fall to undergraduates. iHouse, a way to "bridge living and learning at MIT," according to Professor of Urban Planning Bishwapriya Sanyal, who is involved as a faculty member, will open in New House 1, which used to be the home of the now defunct Russian House. There will be 21 residents.
Preferred Dining Cost Will Increase Again
The fee for the Preferred Dining program is set to increase $25 in the fall, drawing student criticism of dining at MIT. The announcement coincided with the introduction of buffet-style dinners at Pritchett Dining last Monday. The cost of Preferred Dining has already jumped $75 since fall 2005, setting the current price at $300.
