Thursday elections bring in a new MIT Dormitory Council
At last night’s MIT Dormitory Council (DormCon) election meeting, McCormick Hall President Chloe A. Orphanides ’15 was elected DormCon president, and MacGregor House president Walter Menendez ’15 was elected DormCon vice president. They will be replacing outgoing president Eli H. Ross ’14 and vice president Katherine J. Silvestre ’14.
Martin Schmidt named MIT provost
President L. Rafael Reif on Monday announced the appointment of Martin A. Schmidt PhD ’88 as provost, the most senior academic position in the administration.
Email hoax Wednesday causes stir
A fake email that appeared to be sent by President L. Rafael Reif addressing all of MIT was sent to all MIT dorms around 1 a.m. early Wednesday morning, announcing that all classes would be cancelled that day, due to “threatening requests” regarding the Swartz case. The email followed a letter from Reif on Tuesday to the MIT community laying out the Institute’s plans for releasing evidence from the Swartz case.
ASA changes recruitment moratorium
The Association of Student Activities (ASA) has redefined its recruitment moratorium rules for this year into a single statement: “During the Moratorium, groups may not recruit.” This rule, the enforcement of which is described as a “holistic process,” is in effect until the end of the Activities Midway on Friday. In addition, no recruitment can take place during the Midway outside of the event itself.
