Tech Men Fall to Coast Guard, 2-1, With 0:22 Left in Double Overtime
Coast Guard junior David O’Brien nodded home the winning goal with just 22 seconds remaining in double overtime, as the visiting Bears downed New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference foe MIT, 2-1, during the men’s soccer game Saturday. The loss was the first of the season for the Engineers at Steinbrenner Stadium.
Tech Water Polo Wins Pair, Ranks Fifth in All Of Div. III
The MIT men’s water polo team, ranked fifth nationally in Division III, used a balanced offensive attack to earn a pair of victories against Connecticut College and Penn State-Behrend on Sunday afternoon in New London, Conn. The Engineers downed the Camels, 21-11, before returning to the pool almost immediately to defeat the Lions, 15-6.
Tech Women Pound Tufts in Final Match Of MIT Invitational
The MIT women’s volleyball team won its home tournament for the third consecutive year, defeating Tufts University in the championship match by a score of 30-25, 30-18, 30-20. Along the way, Tech (14-1) also bested Bowdoin and Wesleyan in pool play and Williams in the semifinals during last Friday and Saturday’s MIT Women’s Volleyball Invitational, held in Rockwell Cage.
Men’s Golf Posts Best Showing in Nearly Two Seasons
The MIT men’s golf team posted a Saturday team score of 330 and two-day team total of 668 — the lowest respective scores earned by the Engineers in nearly two years — in this past weekend’s Dartmouth Invitational at Hanover Country Club. Despite turning in its best outing of the season, the team placed eighth out of nine schools in competition against a field of seven Division I opponents.
Spying Debacle Leads to Questions About Belichick’s Unwise Actions
Two weeks after the Bill Belichick spying debacle, in which league officials caught Patriots video assistant Matthew Estrella filming Jets defensive signals, the New England Patriots’ record stands at 3-0. When the Pats destroyed the New York Jets 38-14 on Sept. 9 in their season-opener, no one thought that the focus of the game would be a video camera instead of the superior New England offense. When the National Football League released schedules, the San Francisco Chargers-Pats game promised to be one of the premier American Football Conference matchups; instead, it was another 38-14 blowout. This past Sunday, the Patriots were favored by 16.5 points against the Buffalo Bills; the final score of 38-7 actually eclipsed the already-outlandish line.
Tech Allows Two Touchdowns in Last Five Minutes, Loses 17-10
Framingham State sophomore Roland Gervais hauled in a 19-yard touchdown pass from senior Eian Bain with 1:53 left in regulation to cap a late fourth-quarter rally as the Rams upended the MIT football team 17-10 on Saturday at Steinbrenner Stadium. After being kept out of the end zone for the first three quarters, Framingham State (1-1, 1-0) scored 14 points in the final five minutes to push past MIT (0-2, 0-1) in the New England Football Conference opener for both schools.
Volleyball Win Streak Reaches Six as Zhong Sets Record For Aces
The MIT women’s volleyball team extended its winning streak to six after defeating New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference foe Worcester Polytechnic Institute 30-7, 30-7, 30-13 and University of Massachusetts Dartmouth 30-20, 30-15, 30-19 in a pair of matches on Tuesday night. In the conference nightcap, Rose Zhong ’08 tallied an Institute-record 13 aces, recording 10 in the opening game, and added a team-high 12 digs.
Preis Nets Five Goals, Propels No. 8 MIT to 18-8 Win Over Queens
John V. Preis ’11 continued the phenomenal start to his freshman campaign on Saturday afternoon, scoring five goals in MIT’s 18-8 win over host Queens College in each team’s Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division opener. Preis now has a team-best 26 goals.
Men’s Soccer Game Ends In 0-0 Tie Against Clark Stormy Weather Creates Defensive Match
A hard-fought men’s soccer match between conference foes MIT and Clark University ended in a 0-0 tie on Saturday afternoon at Steinbrenner Stadium, as each team opened its New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference schedule with a well-deserved point. The scoreless draw is the first such result for the Engineers since 1996, when they had two in one season against both Gordon College and Babson College.

Ludlum Nets Four Goals in 6-1 Victory Over UMass Dartmouth
Amy S. Ludlum ’08 delivered a four-goal, 10-point performance that propelled the Engineers to a 6-1 victory over University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Tuesday at Steinbrenner Stadium. Ludlum, the reigning NEWMAC Player of the Year, scored four times in the first 37 minutes and assisted on another first-half finish as MIT (3-1-0) cruised to its third consecutive win.
Overtime Goal Lifts MIT In 2-1 Victory Over Lasell
The field hockey team picked up its first home win of the season following a 2-1 overtime victory against Lasell College on Tuesday night. Ashley N. Mobbs ’11 converted a feed from Jessica M. Oleinik ’11 with 5:52 remaining in overtime to give the Engineers (2-2) their second win in a row. With the loss, the Lasers’ ledger dropped to 0-3 on the year.
Tech Places Second in Hiram College Tourney Buchanan Named to All-Tournament Team
The women’s volleyball team continued its successful season this past weekend with a second-place finish at the Hiram College Invitational in Hiram, Ohio. MIT opened the weekend by blanking Geneva College 30-22, 30-20, 30-21, but then fell to the host Terriers 30-19, 30-23, 31-29. The Engineers bounced back by outlasting Saint Mary’s College (Ind.) 29-31, 30-23, 30-25, 21-30, 15-13 and sweeping Thiel College 30-24, 30-22, 30-28. Senior defensive specialist Carrie C. Buchanan ’08 represented MIT (6-1) on the All-Tournament Team.

MIT women’s soccer scored four unanswered goals in the second half, powering to a 5-2 victory against Worcester State in the 2007 home opener at Steinbrenner Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Jean E. “Liz” Theurer ’10 and Kathryn A. Pesce ’10 paced a remarkable performance for the Engineers by scoring two goals apiece, while Amy S. Ludlum ’08 also totaled four points to give MIT its second consecutive win.
