MITCHELL H. KATES ’13: Kates dominates the court as MIT point guard
Mitchell H. Kates ’13 is a Course 6-3 (Computer Science and Engineering) junior on the MIT Varsity Basketball Team who has been recognized for his stellar play on numerous occasions throughout high school and college. During high school, Kates won the Kerwin Award, awarded to the best player in the Shore Conference (New Jersey), broke the career assists record at Colts Neck High School, and received a gold medal on the National U-16 United States Maccabi Basketball Team in Israel in 2005. After coming to MIT, Kates became NEWMAC Rookie of the Year as a freshman, was selected to the NEWMAC all-conference team all three years, and was a 4th team All-American this year.
Cycling team wins ECCC title
Two months ago, the MIT cycling team kicked off the Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference (ECCC) road season with a near perfect team performance at the Rutgers’ “Frozen Toed Season Opener.” After eight consecutive race weekends of consistent top results, the MIT cycling team held an unattainable lead in the team standings. Captains Adam P. Bry G and Katie J. Quinn G were assured to finish with the male and female individual season leader jerseys coming into the regular season finale, the “Live Free or Ride Harder” race weekend hosted by the University of New Hampshire on April 28 and 29.
Gymnastics dominates
Having just won five out of their six meets, the MIT Women’s Gymnastics team was fully confident and prepared to enter the National Association of Intercollegiate Gymnastics Clubs’ meet in Salt Lake City, Utah. The meet was at the Salt Lake City Convention Center, April 19–21, and over 50 gymnastics clubs from the United States entered the competition. MIT decidedly won the competition with 149.25 points overall.
Men’s tennis beats Springfield College
MIT took the first step towards defending its New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis title with a 5-0 win over Springfield College today in a semifinal match of the 2012 NEWMAC Tournament. MIT improved to 14-4 with the victory while Springfield fell to 8-8 on the season.
Track and field dominates at weekend invitationals
This past weekend the MIT track and field team was split between two invitational meets. Although the meets were non-scoring, MIT posted some solid performances as the team prepares for the championship season.
Nine triathletes compete at Nationals in Ala.
This past weekend, five men and four women from the MIT Triathlon Club competed at the USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Members raced against 1,200 graduate and undergraduate triathletes from over 100 schools across the nation in an Olympic distance triathlon, which consists of a 1500-meter swim followed by a 25-mile bike and a 6.2-mile run. The entire event takes between two and three hours to complete, with the fastest elite males finishing in just under two hours.
Baseball team beats WPI
MIT received a strong pitching performance from junior Aric J. Dama in game one and then unleashed a 16-hit attack in game two that resulted in a sweep over WPI in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader. MIT improved to 18-14 overall and 9-10 in the NEWMAC while WPI fell to 21-15 and 9-9 after the final conference games of the season.
Men’s tennis NEWMAC performance is perfect
MIT Men’s Tennis stayed perfect in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference play this afternoon with an 8-1 victory over Wheaton College. The No. 28 Engineers won their seventh straight match and improved to 12-3 overall and 4-0 in the NEWMAC. Wheaton fell to 6-6 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
sMITe takes third place in conference, clinches spot in Regionals
In the Boston Metro Conference championships last weekend, sMITe, MIT Women’s Ultimate team, placed third and clinched a spot at New England DI Regionals. By playing hard through some long points and overcoming injuries, the team won crucial games, beating Harvard, Boston College (BC) and Boston University (BU).
Baseball beats Clark, improves conference chances
After tossing a complete game shutout against Springfield College in his last outing, there was very little that Torre M. Swanson ’12 could have done against the Clark University Cougars on Saturday to improve upon his prior performance. Yet he did just that, allowing only a bunt single in seven innings to help the Engineers capture the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader en route to a sweep of the three-game weekend series.
ROBIN S. SHIN ’12: Shin named NE Conference Fencer of the Year
Meet Robin S. Shin ’12. When she isn’t busy tooling away in her architecture studio, she fences for the MIT Women’s varsity team. She was recently named the Northeast Conference Fencer of the Year, and placed 20th at the NCAA competition, where she was the only representative from Division III.
Cycling sweeps competition at the ‘Lux et Velocitas’ races
On April 7 and 8, MIT’s cycling team competed at the “Lux et Velocitas” races hosted by Yale University in New Haven, Conn. The three-race weekend took place in East Rock Park at the foot of the East Rock cliff, New Haven’s tallest landscape feature.
Women’s ultimate frisbee team wins over spring break
Even though the team is smaller than in previous years, sMITe, MIT’s Women’s Ultimate team, has set high expectations. The team is anchored by junior standout Michelle A. Rybak, who runs the offense with big huck throws and fast disc movement. Together with veteran players Alisha R. Schor G and Anna Katherine deRegt G, sMITe’s captains have driven the team to outperform previous years.
CHARLES HSU ’14: Hsu does crew, viola, and course 7 research
Charles Hsu ’14 is a sophomore in Course 7 (Biology) who is on the MIT Varsity Heavyweight Crew Team. He enjoys creating things and aspires to become a surgeon. Charles was on the 2011 MIT IGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine competition) team that placed fourth out of over 150 international teams. He is also working on the Solarclave project, which won the 2011 MIT IDEAS and Global Challenge competitions. The Solarclave is a low-cost solar-powered autoclave designed to provide third-world rural clinics with a portable and reliable method of sterilization. He is currently working in the Weiss Lab on genetically engineering autonomously patterning tissues, and has also worked on microfluidics and high-speed photography of cell-printing. Charles balances his scientific interests with his passion for the viola. Not only does he play his viola for a chamber music group, but pursues the craft of violin making in his spare time.
Gymnastics dominates this season as a club team
It’s an exciting year to be on the Women’s Gymnastics team at MIT. Even though they were cut from varsity status to club status in 2009, the team has powered through the past two years and won at last year’s nationals.
