Squash victorious

BU and BC fall in close matches

The MIT squash team welcomed Boston University and Boston College to the Z-Center Squash courts on Saturday and the Engineers were able to come away with a pair of victories, defeating BU, 8-1, and BC, 5-4, to improve to 7-10 on the season. Four different Tech players picked up wins in both matches led by freshman Sung Won “Steve” Cho ’15, who improved to 8-9 on the season.

Cho earned a hard-fought, five-set victory over BU’s Jacob Roscoe in the No. 2 position, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8. The freshman also defeated his opponent from Boston College 15-13, 7-11, 11-3, 11-3.

Freshman Peter G. Riley was another double-winner, winning matches in the third and fourth spots. At No. 3, Riley defeated BU’s LuQuan Tan 12-10, 5-11, 11-6, 11-4. He then came back for a 12-10, 9-11, 11-9, 11-4 win over Max Ortwein of Boston College later in the day.

Freshman David W. Bian and Abhiranjan Mitra ’14 also came up with a pair of victories each. Mitra earned the deciding team point against BC with his win, 11-7, 11-4, 11-9, over Kilbourn Gordon. Bian dispatched his opponent, Edward Glick, 12-10, 11-3, 11-5, against the Eagles.

Senior Austin C. Anderson, playing in the top position for the first time this season, won his match against Boston University in come from behind fashion, 7-11, 11-7, 11-6, 12-10.

The Engineers will host Middlebury College next Saturday, Feb. 11 in their final regular season match at 11 a.m. Tech will then prepare for the College Squash Association (CSA) team and individual championships in late February and early March.
