Rainy stretch ahead
After some unusually warm temperatures this week, we are headed for a more unsettled pattern from today through the end of the weekend. Today will be cloudy, with a small bit of rain expected between 3 and 4 p.m. This is the beginning of a larger, more complex system moving through this weekend.
Starting with the bigger picture, a low pressure will move through Ontario and Quebec today, with part of it splitting off and lagging behind. A cold front extending southward from the original low will crawl into the northeast on Friday, pulling lots of moisture northward from the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic. Meanwhile, the cut-off low that split from the main system will dig southward into Michigan before ejecting to the east into New England on Saturday, forming a new low-pressure system with the moisture from the cold front.
What this means for Boston is heavy rain starting Thursday night that will last through much of the day on Friday. With the deep moisture tap, the rain is expected to be more convective in nature, leading to localized heavier rain cells as well as on-and-off rain throughout the day. The chance for a rumble of thunder cannot be ruled out. The rain should clear out by late Saturday morning, with the day remaining mostly dry. As the low-pressure system reorganizes itself, rain will fill back in across New England from Saturday night through Sunday morning.
All said and done, we are expected to receive one to two inches of some much-needed rain, given how little it rained in October. Temperatures are also expected to steadily cool off with the passage of this multi-day system, starting in the upper 60s on Friday and ending in the lower 50s on Sunday. The good news is that sunshine is expected all of next week, with temperatures returning to normal for this time of year.
