In Memoriam: Igor Paul
Professor Emeritus Igor Paul ’60, SM’61, PhD’64 passed away Dec. 17, 2023 in St. Petersburg, Florida. He was 87.
Paul served as Course 2 faculty for nearly forty years after earning his PhD. He constructed the design and manufacturing curriculum of Course 2 and won numerous accolades from the Institute, including the DeFlorez Award for Creativity in Design in 1960 and the Carl Soderberg Distinguished Service Award in 2003.
At MIT, Paul taught courses including 2.72 (Elements of Mechanical Design), 2.70 (now 2.007, Design and Manufacturing I), and 2.009 (Product Engineering Processes). Paul’s research interests included product and machine design, product safety, robotics, and biomechanics.
Paul was a witness in major product liability cases because of his expertise in product design and safety. He also contributed to the development of inertial guidance systems for NASA and consulted for local hospitals and medical centers.
Paul is survived by his wife, his children, and his grandchildren.
