Class of 2023 to declare majors virtually

Despite COVID-19 changes, declaration deadline remains the same

All first-year undergraduates will be expected to declare a major by April 21. The Office of the First Year (OFY) sent an email to first years containing a link for the online major declaration form April 7.

Students will receive a departmental advisor and a home department after filling out the form. Those who remain undecided have the opportunity to remain an undesignated sophomore.

Students are strongly encouraged to discuss their choice of major with their first-year advisors and associate advisors before submitting the form.

Much of the process for major declaration has remained the same despite the disruption caused by COVID-19. Most notably, the deadline of the declaration form has not changed.

OFY is also offering a series of virtual resources and events for first years.

“For the past few years we have held similar” events, but due to COVID-19, this year’s events “had to be made virtual,” Elizabeth Young, OFY associate dean and director, wrote in an email to The Tech.

The Majors Open House is a series of virtual events for students to ask questions and explore potential major options April 14-16. Associate advisors and UPOP alumni from every major held Major Mixer Zoom chats April 14. Career Advising & Professional Development remains another resource for first years.
