Two Channels Added to MIT Cable

Two new channels were added this fall to the MIT Cable lineup: TVJapan (channel 16) and Big Ten Network (channel 20), according to Randall W. Winchester, Team Leader of MIT Cable Television.

TVJapan is the only 24/7 Japanese broadcasting channel in North America and offers Japanese programming including NHK (Japanese Broadcasting Corporation) news, educational and children’s shows, and sports (including broadcasts of Grand Sumo tournaments). Live programs are broadcast in Japanese with an English crawl, while many of the recorded programs are shown with subtitles or broadcasted in English. The addition is sponsored by the Language Learning and Resource Center.

Big Ten Network primarily broadcasts sports from the Big Ten Conference schools. Programming includes broadcasts of classic games, live sporting events, and other sports-related shows, as well as original television programming from each of the Big Ten member institutions. Big Ten Network was added at no additional charge to the Institute, and the addition was approved by Cable-storm, the student committee advising MIT Cable on channel modifications.

No other channels are currently under consideration for addition to the lineup.
